Tacoma problem starting

Hello all, I have been having problems starting my Toyota on and off for about two weeks. When I turn the key I get a quick sound like its trying to turn over then nothing, no clicking no turning over just nothing. So I turn the key to off and try again, then it starts up on the second attempt always. This has happened twice in about 2 to 3 weeks.

What do you think this can be? I just changed the battery about a year ago and I have a good quality battery in there now.

How old is your battery? If it's fairly new, your starter is about to give up. I had the same experience, ended up replacing my starter. Problem solved.

 

About a year old, thank you very much for your answer. How bad was the change out? Is there any way to test the starter?

I'm not sure how to test the starter, but by acting up like that it must be the starter. The change up took me about two hours I always take my time especially if its my first time. I took my old one to Pep Boys and they match it if they are the same shape like bolt location.

 

I thought auto zone could check starters? Or is it alternators?

 

Any chance it is a key problem with the Toyota Immobilizer System?

 

I don't think so because I try again right after and it starts right up.

I really think it could be the starter and or starter relay.

typically it is just the copper contacts on the starter eroding away

the starter plunger is designed to slap those contacts together at lighting speed
(literally) because the amps are huge and a big spark is created each time you start.

despite the high-speed slap of the plunger...
there is always a spark that vaporises some copper, and over time the contacts
get cruddy/crappy/start to weld together and ....you need to change the copper contacts
at a minimum.

with some socket wrench extensions and a flea-bay copper plunger and contact kit, you can
do this yourself. yank starter, replace contacts, good to go.



something like this. be sure to cross-check for your exact starter as the kits are slightly different
when you crack yours open you will see one of those (usually the dog-leg curved one) little contacts worn paper thin,
and the plunger copper ring may also be a bit thin
