Actually, in the past when I've had speakers that were blown (apparently the previous owner of my Grand Cherokee was 'all about that bass') it's just been garbly. Talk radio sounded like they were underwater and music was all scratchy.

If you like good sounding music, stop wasting your money on $30 speakers! :smack:

Excuse me, they were $38 for the rear ones cause you hardly hear them. My new 600A dual coil sub was $170 plus I needed a 600A mini-amp to go with it.

    Door speakers were $100

    Dash tweeters $106

The $38 tweeters sounded GREAT in my 4R, pioneer makes great products

Years ago when I was into systems it all started with the head unit... Has that changed?

The runner I did the HU first but the speakers were blown, so they were done shortly afterward.

The FJ has a 6 disk changer and an AUX input, so I don't really have an immediate need to swap my HU out

Nope, no change at all. HU make the music. HU's and speakers are the most important parts

Yup - There's a fair assortment. Clay Smith is pretty popular. Mine was custom ground - not too big but enough for a decent lope and yet more low end torque. The damn car is really light so it doesn't need a lot of HP to get it moving to a certain death speed. Comparing this old thing to the Tacoma, I'm surprised anyone survived back in the day. The Falcon has manual drum brakes (had a single bowl master cylinder = no brakes if a line broke), manual steering with plenty of play & bump steet, solid noncollapsable steering column (spear of death), etc... I added lap belts to keep the bodies in place. Now the Tacoma, with all of it's bells and whistles, should be so safe I can run into all sorts of things and yet walk away unscathed.

    As for stereos:

I'm another for a decent sound system - used to have aftermarket in all of my rides up to the Tacoma. I only need them to be loud enough to drown out my yelling at the windshield on the way home from work. My first Toyota (Celica sedan - '82 or '83, I think) had a Blaupunkt system complete with a separate Blaupunkt equalizer; 1500 Watts - 500 through 4 highs/mids & 1000 through 2 - 12" subs. Damn roof used to visibly lift with each boom. Went to college in that car - now I can hear for shit...

Lol. My '69 has manual drums too, but it weighs a lot. It's a good endorsement for safe following distances, haha!
I've also got that one pot master cylinder, but there's an aftermarket 2-pot version that I'm going to swap in at some point in the near future. It's fairly cheap and it bolts right in, so I figure it's worth it for the safety factor.
Especially since I also have the death spear steering shaft, loose steering w/lots of bump steer, and lap belts.

And this is why I'd like to do something with mine. Though, I actually like my head unit, just wish it did video heh. So I'm thinking I'd need a speaker amp and new speakers and that's $$$

Sound proofing was the one thing I never did on the STi. I have two amps, a sub (had two at one point), components and a high end HU in it and it didn't sound too bad at all. I felt it was a mark of maturity from when I went down from two subs to one. I never had a particularly loud system, but I could overpower my stereo with just bass, and now I can't really, so I suppose that's progress. In HS, my buddy had enough sub to blur my vision...that was an adventure.

The sad thing is the OEMs are getting miles better in quality than what they used to have. The HUs are also so well integrated into the dash these days. I don't really want to rip out my HU to add something different, to have to get a new adapter to use the steering wheel controls.

When I blow out my speakers, I'll throw something nice in there, maybe add some matting, I dunno.

Quick question. Does anyone have weather tech window visors? Now the question being if you do have they scratched your tint or windows at the top? I have heard that they have.

Probably 2" on the oem ones. They suck.

I can help you install some 3.5" ones if you want :D

I did on my 4Runner. I didn't notice any scratching, but I didn't have them on for very long
