Alright, so I'm thinking about selling/trading my truck to get an sti or an evo. I'm currently in college and drive back and forth from Knoxville to Nashville all the time and the gas mileage is killing me. (Not that an sti or evo would be much better, but a little) My question is, what should I ask for it. I mean obviously I'm not going to get all of the money I have in it back out, parting out would be an option but that would make this process long and painful. Kelley Blue Book on my truck is $11,3xx in very good condition. Here's the mods. Just looking for honest opinions.
    5100’s and OME 885’s (front)
    1.5" aal in rear
    285/75r16 BFG KM2’s
    Pioneer AVH-x3500BHS
    1000watt Amp to 2 10" kicker cvr's.
all-pro rear bumper with receiver hitch
    Spyder led tailights
    SOS concepts hybrid front bumper
Cb setup (cobra 19 with 4' firestix)

Mods are almost always never valued in the sale of a vehicle. Sometimes they kill the sale. Best to sell aftermarket parts and put vehicle back as close to stock. You'd have to find someone with your taste in what you've done to it.

in the fi:rst statement you worried about gas mileage and the second statement you're not worried about gas mileage you don't make any sense if I were you I would just keep the gas mileage sucking truckand enjoy all the mods and everything that you put into it, to its full extent or life.

An acquaintance (wouldn't really call him a friend) sold his HEAVILY modded and professionally done 94 Supra turbo 6-speed in a rare color. The buyers proceeded to take off all the parts and returned it to stock. They sold it for more than they bought it for and lied about it NEVER being modded. In the end they had 20k+ of extremely high end parts to play with. I'm not comparing the two vehicles, they are quite different when it comes to the used market. But the point remains, mods don't equal higher value when reselling, some people can't get that through their thick heads though.

    Stock
Mods are worth .01 per dollar spent IMO.

I only heavily modified two vehicles. Both were returned to stock before selling and parts sold on ebay.

ATVs always done the same way. I had over 30k invested in a RZR 800S. Took everything off and made it stock when I sold it(minus the roll cage) and sold everything on ebay. Much better return on my investment.

for what you save in gas you'll lose to insurance on an sti/evo

also those cars tend to be heavily abused by young kids with parent's money. Probably need a new clutch to start.

And I totally agree on parting out before you sell. I think some modded cars/trucks might even get offered less money than stock because the new owner wants to do it themselves, or doesn't like your taste in mods, or would just rather stock

How long would it take to recoup the difference in fuel savings?? 10 years?
In addition give up on the reputation of reliability.
Unless you were going to use a BICYCLE-it would not be worth the trade.
    In my opinion.

My truck is modified and im fine with that, never plan to sell and if I did.. the buyer would have to deal with my welded bumpers, sliders and beefed up suspension.

Sure it can all be cut off but why when it serves a purpose.

I have way more than $7k invested into a $12k truck and would be fine with getting $12-$14k for it.

I would drive back home maybe twice a year when I was in college. Never understood the folks who went back home every weekend or several times a month lol.

Anyway back to topic: You will regret getting rid of the truck. I got rid of my jeep and got a accord coupe (all done up right) my senior year of high school to "save gas" ended up trading it in for a tundra a year later cause I hated sitting down so low and not being able to "go everwhere". Sold the tundra within 6 months cause gas was too high (over $4.00 gal then) got a acura TL....still hated the car thing, traded for a civic for better gas...wasted tons of money and finally got a real job after graduating and was able to get the Taco and I love it.

Most people I know won't touch a modded truck with a lift and large tires even for a good deal. They would be skeptical that it could have been beat and off-roaded even if it never was, or have issues from the lift wearing out parts prematurely.

I don't understand why you would add a heavy bumper, lift, and large tires to destroy your gas mileage, and then turn around and sell it for a car that doesn't get any better mileage than your current truck in a stock configuration.

Thanks for all the opinions guys. I've had 2 built wrx's and a built 350z in the past and with one of the wrx's (tuned to 22psi peak on 850cc injectors) i could get about 20-22 on the interstate if I cruised at 75-80 and kept out of boost. I'm currently getting around 15 hwy. I guess It's not really the gas mileage factor so much as I miss having something to race. I just really needed people to talk me out of getting rid of the truck before I 4wd swap it and completely blow any chance of recovering money from this thing.

Well that's a whole different story than doing it for the gas mileage, and makes much more sense. Go with whatever is going to make you happiest driving, but don't do it for the gas mileage. If you still have the parts to return it to stock to sell or trade in; you could put some feelers out there on craigslist for free, just to see if anyone local might be interested in buying a bunch of your mods together as a package. In my opinion you'll loose out the most trying to sell it pre-modded, unless you get lucky and find that one special buyer.

Could also look for a cheap used racer that you could build up over time, if you have a few grand saved up. Might help get rid of the racing urge on the weekends while keeping the truck as a reliable daily driver too.

As everyone else said the mods don't add anything to the value. What I did with my last Tacoma was list it on auto trader and advertised that I would return the truck to stock. My plan was to put those parts on my new tacoma, as the parts were still new. If they wanted anything that was currently on the truck I would charge for those parts.

Thats what ended up happening. The guy wanted me to leave the lift on the truck so I charged what the suspension would cost me to buy it for my new tacoma.
