The 4 cylinders have TOB issues as well. Mostly just general wear and part failure. I got a brand new one a while back and it made noise from the start. Had to parts-warranty it. Perhaps not as much as the V6 ones, but yeah, still have issues.

I noticed something like this with my brand spanking new '12 2.7. It doesn't want to go into first even with the clutch all the way in while rolling at a decent speed.

With my muscle cars, I used to get ready for a tight turn by clutching in and going to first and then braking and letting it out. Taco doesn't seem to like it too much. Seems it would rather lug in second. Haven't tried rev-matching too much think it may help with it.

Reverse isn't an issue though and it certainly doesn't lock me out. Just sometimes it seems to take more force to get it into first while moving and I think I can hear the syncro whirring.

More info on this would be great, don't want to put a lot of premature wear on my new baby :D

Not much more info than what has been given I don' think. Different manufacturers set up their transmissions differently. Most every manual uses a syncro to match up the input and output speeds for engagement. the faster you are going, the closer the shaft speed is, so it becomes easier to shift into those gears. First gear tends to be one of those that has the most difficulty.

I guess I just think it was more noticeable that it didn't like shifting to first even with the clutch fully depressed. Guess I didn't know that the syncro would be working then. Makes sense though thanks :)

    Hey fellas,

Have a 105k on my Taco and just noticed an issue when attempting to shift into first. The stick feels like it's not locking in crisp and instead feels like its bumping off third and falling in!!! Thought it is was just me at first, but noticed a little difficulty shifting into reverse also.

Was wondering if it is a synchronizer issue, what it would cost to repair???? My buddy is a Taco Mech and have kept her well maintained with routine lube maintenance and etc. so not sure if a clutch job is needed or something with the stick because I hear a lot of chattering???

    Any help would be appreciated,
    Eppy

The chattering is probably the clutch. You should get the URD throwout bearing while you have it apart. As far as the 1st/reverse issue it probably is the syncros. If you do it yourself the parts will be a few hundred bucks. If you pay someone else to do it I would guess it's $1500 for the trans rebuild, maybe more, plus the cost of a new flywheel, clutch, and the URD takeout bearing...could be as high as $3000. Talk to your mechanic buddy.

I have a w59 and my transmission has slowly been getting harder to shift into 1st and reverse from a dead stop. It kinda feels like the clutch doesn't fully disengage. For example it takes a while to spin down or feels like it won't spin down. Some days worse than the other. I typically rev match all the time. The last owner put a performance clutch in it. I put 30k on the truck since I bought it 6 years ago. The clutch doesn't rattle and bites really hard. Curious what should be plan of attack. Clutch wearing out? Transmission need service?
