So... i wanted to invest in a soundsystem

I'm getting a check today for around 400$, instead of buying the whole system at once i figured i'd install everything piece by piece, what should i buy first?? (I have no idea really about how sound systems work) hahaha any help would be appreciated guys, I prefer high quality sound rather then overkill bass or volume , (i just want it to be louder then the tacoma stock system) what should i do guyyyyys any amp/sub/head unit recommendations would be greatly appreciated! also i live in southern california got any hookups for audio? :O

 

I started with putting Raamat on all 4 doors. You could spend 150 on the Raam mat, and have 250 to spend on replacing all 4 speakers right off the bat. I did that with about $500, and improved my volume quite a bit. Next step is head unit, then amp and sub. I really like the Eclipse av62n, and the alpine pdx5, sub not so sure yet, just a good solid 10 to provide some bass.

I put Infiniti components up front and jbl 2 ways in the back. I cant remember the exact model numbers but I bought them at sonixelectronics.com, great prices. Crutchfield is great, but they are way overpriced on most items. My advise is to spend the most money on the front speakers, they are very important in your sound, and less and the rear, they are basically for sound fill.

I normally try to knock things out in sets trying to work smart rather than harder.

When you replace the head unti go ahead and run the wiring (rcas, remote wire, etc) so you don't have to take you dash apart twice.

When you replace the speakers do the deadening at the same time.

You get the idea...preplanning will help you save time

 

you'd be surprised in the difference in sound by just replacing the stock HU with something nice.

Then do the doors with mat and speakers. 6x9's up front and 6.5's in the back.

quality sound is subjective...I like clean, clear sound with a realistic soundstage vs loud...for me that means good mid range and highs with crisp responding bass. Accordingly, I have two 8" JL Audio 8w6's in my truck. You can find them on craigslist used for a low price. You just want a solid two channel amp to run them...and another tow channel amp to run the fronts. I agree, rear doors are for fill more so than anything else...again, don't be afraid to buy used. I bought three old ART series PPIs for around $300 and it powers my two sets of components (front and rear) and my two subs. (for some reason, there are old competition guys out there who just started having kids and want to clean out their garages...the amps I bought would have retailed for over $2,000 new)

 

i don't think i'll be able to do this by myself haha so if i go to the shop today you suggest i get a head unit first, and tell them to run the wires? o_o

 

6.5 is what I did all the way around, components up front though. I bought my speaker baffles from *********. I had good luck with them, but would not use them again because of the horror stories I have heard since. I will go to mr marv for my sub box, he is a vendor on TW.

 

I would still do speakers first. A new head unit would improve your sound, but once you see the stock speakers you will understand what I mean by the importance of new speakers. The stock speakers look they came out of one of a clock radio, it is a total joke.

 

I second that... The stock speakers are incredibly ridiculous. Speakers and headunit will make your music sound so much better right off the bat,

 

If you're going with an aftermarket headunit, I'd pick that up first. Then look into your speakers if you will be replacing them. Then your sub and amp. I'm keeping stock speakers and headunit but I'll be installing this weekend a JL Audio W3v3 8" with powered by the Alpine MRP-M350 amp hat I have left from a previous install.
