Honest Impressions of stock BFG Rugged Trail T/A tires ONROAD MANNERS ONLY, /NOT/ OFF

Hey everyone, just curious how those of you with second gen tacomas with the stock TRD off road package like the Onroad manners of the stock BFG rugged trail T/A tires, mainly in the aspects of:

Road Noise (very important for my taste, the quieter the better)

On road performance in the rain and snow

Wear (not really important to me, unless it unusual wear like sidewall tumors etc.)

I really would like to know owners impressions because im thinking about getting them for my next set because I really like the look of them, especially the sidewall treads and the solid white lettering.

Again, I like these tires solely based on looks alone, off road characteristics im not interested in because I dont do it nor do I want to. Im just extremely concerned because I had the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's on my truck and absolutely hated them, they were too loud and were awful in the rain ... but since the rugged trails have a different tread pattern im assuming they might be a better fit for me, I know all off roaders coined the rugged trails as rugged fails, thats why I need the opinions of people who use their tacomas as onroad rigs solely like myself.

To add, owners of 6 speed manual TRD off road tacomas, your opinions are especially valued because I also drive a 6 speed and with every different set of tires, im sure you can agree with me, that shift feel always feels different. So thanks in advance, all help is greatly appreciated

 

I have 43,000 miles on these tires.

Road Noise (very important for my taste, the quieter the better) I give these tires an A- for noise. I am just now starting to get a tire slapping noise when I drive over cracks and expansion joints. No hum.

On road performance in the rain and snow. The tires started spinning out during quick take offs on wet roads around 35,000 miles. Snow traction was still good this winter but not as good as winters past.

Wear (not really important to me, unless it unusual wear like sidewall tumors etc.) I might get 5000-7000 more miles but will have new tires before next winter.



To add, owners of 6 speed manual TRD off road tacomas, your opinions are especially valued. My truck is an automatic.

Alright cool, thank you for the input, this is about the wear I expect with my current dunlop at21's , if I can get 40k out of a set of tires with decent performance the whole way through thats acceptable to me, thank you very much, I still would love to hear from a 6 speed owner as well

 

Im very surprised even dry road performance was that bad... hm :/

 

For the road I had no complaints at all....dry, rain, etc. Never tried them out in sleet/snow though. They lasted for about 30K miles with rotations every 5K.

Thanks for the compliment Kyle.....I love them also, you can't even buy them anymore. I have the Auto tranny. As I said though, those tires were great on the road. But when I got stuck in 4x4, in my own yard......they had to go.

 

The stock rugged fails are pieces of shit. After 15,000 miles i got rid of them... didn't trust the tread that was left for the upcoming winter. I went with bfg all terrain t/a's. I've gone through around 5 sets of them over the last 40 years. Great tire for on/off road and they last around 70,000 miles.

Sure thing man ! And yeah I know, its a shame you can't buy them anymore. And I had that issue with my previous subaru getting stuck in my own driveway, but that had Bridgestones on it lol

 

I'm in the "rugged fail" camp. I also have an automatic.

2011 AccessCab, TRD/OR. I'm at 40k miles (ish), both in DFW, TX and Denver, CO.

After a couple of years (maybe 20k?), in Texas rain, garbage. Spins on nearly every wet right turn. Often even when pulling away straight from a stop I was forced into 4x4 just to get moving. I didn't dare take it out in Dallas ice storms. (More because of the other idiots that for the tires, but still.)

At 35k+ in Colorado snow, even worse. It takes a LOT of traction control in 4HI to do anything at all. If I ever turned off 4x4, the truck became a paperweight. Spin the rears all you want, you ain't moving.

I'm to the second wear bar, so they're still legal, but in the best conditions, they've probably got less than a year of tread left.

The reason I'm here in the tire forum is because I'm shopping for replacements.

 

They sucked after 10k miles you'd be better off to get something like the rugged terrains or Toyo open country tires.

 

Do you think rugged terrains would be better in the rain than the rugged trails? Just by looking at the tread pattern I think that may be so, but im not 100% sure

 

They suck. I hate the rugged terrains that came on mine. They are not wet climate tires. I imagine they aren't so bad in the desert but in the northeast they leave much to be desired.

 

Just bought 2013 trd off road with 30k miles on bfg's noisy. no traction in my sandy drive way so they had to go. Cooper discoverer ATP great tire on my Jeep just installed on the new to me truck so far so good but time will tell.

 

WTF "Texas Rain" spins on nearly every right turn, often had to put it in 4x4 when pulling away from a stop sign going straight? how the hell does that happen? what type of rain do you guys get in Texas? are the roads covered in Oil.

OP... I have the Rugged Trails on my 14 and have had them for about 27,xxx miles now! never once have I had any issues with them, whether it be road noise rain/snow/dry pavement driving! They kicked ass this year in NH during this "weak" winter!

 

I had the stock Rugged Trails on my '13 six speed manual for about 60,000 km.

Road Noise (very important for my taste, the quieter the better) - Not too bad.

On road performance in the rain and snow. - Poor in the rain, hydroplane easily, not too bad in snow.

Wear - They lasted 60,000 km and still had usable tread, but I wanted a chunkier tire for better offroad performance.

Over all, I would consider them an OK, but not good, tire.

 

This seems to be the general with BFG tires... id love to find out why they are so bad in the rain

 

I was thinking the same thing about the so called 'texas rain' lol, but hey, I appreciate the input. And to add to my previous comment, they have been good in the rain for you? Like nearly perfect?
