Hey guys, just got an 01 Tacoma 3.4l auto, my first Toyota and I'm fully converted. When I stomp on it she revs up to 7900 rpms before shifting, i obviously wouldn't continually intentionally rev it that high. However this has me to wonder if maybe someone tweaked the shift points? It also ticks like a spark knock almost when it is fully warmed up, is not consistent at idle but is cruising on the highway. It appears bone stock I put factory plugs in, amsoil Xl 5w 30 when I first got it. I also see timing belt was done 50k ago. Thanks for reading and I look forward to what you all have to say.

When I floor mine (v6 auto) it will get to 5500 or so and then shift. 7900 seems a little high for this motor, maybe the tach is wrong. Do you have something like an UltraGauge or some OBD2 scanner that will tell you the RPM so you can see if maybe the gauge is bad.

If it is getting revved to 7900 each shift and has been for awhile,,that's probably not a spark knock/tick you are hearing, but something more sinister.

    Double check your shift rpms.

Video or it didn't happen! aren't the rev limiters set at like 5,500RPM? I know mine is...& 7,900RPM!?!?!? that would be SCREAMING for one of these engines I would think it would need to be a built, balanced & blueprinted engine to spin that kind of RPM without blowing...

what is the rpm at idle? Could there be an issue with having a 4 cylinder tach on the 3.4?

    7900 x 2/3 = 5266?

One would think so. Been to a few blowup partys that would make you think twice about that statement. Fire it up, toss a brick on the go-pedal,,and start laying bets. Have a few extra ignition coils on hand, because those usually melt before the engine blows.

If it is turning those kind of rpms each loaded shift,,I WANT A RIDE!!,,just to verify.:D.

Mod, that is my fear. I have considered that the tach could be wrong, and if it is a 4 cylinder tachometer that would make sense at 2/3 ratio. Well my friend rode with me and he said it sounds like it's trying to suck the entire air box in that's at like 6500 up. I just know from what I've heard these are a bullet proof engine so maybe it's just tough enough to handle it haha but that's a good idea to get a scanner and see, however how much and where could I get one to tell me the rpm like the one at advance auto capable of that? Can I post a video in a reply? I'm not bsing...

Well, it's tough enough to handle it,,but the question is for how long and that should give fear.

You need ABOUT 3 things for a tach to work. Positive, negative and a pickup/read wire. On the back or in the instructions there is usually a indicator for 2 cycle or 4 cycle and then 4-6-8 cylinder engine selection(on some).

Yes, you can post a video in a reply. A simple cell phone vid will do it, if you can do that. I use the Photobucket picture hosting site. There are tutorials on how to do that on there site. Very easy once you use it a few times and it is a free site that is very quick.

If you have a Youtube account,,that can be used as well, as well as answering stuff about adding a tach and how that is done.

Get yourself a scan guage or an ultra gauge! They are so very useful for so many things! Its worth it! I have the scan gauge, it was around $150. Not sure about the ultra, I think its cheaper. But it'll tell ya rpm and a bazillion other things including being a code reader. Everyone should have one!

If you have smartphone you could use Torque app and buy a bluetooth adapter for around $20 to plug into the obdII port. As far as I know it does everything The ultraguage and scanguage do.

A mech shop with a scanner could check pretty quick and they might let you slide without a dime spent. Still, if they charge you $40 for the check,,it is still cheaper than a trans or motor,,or both.

Or do like the guys posted,,and pick up a Scanguage.

Hey OP! Using that torque app that Reh5108 mentioned is good too! Its also pretty cheap. But the reason I went with the scanguage is because its a stand alone instrument. The torque app is used on your phone/tablet/lap top. So you're always having to set up your phone/tablet in a way u can watch it while driving and draining your battery on your device. Kinda a hassle at least for my needs. But if you aren't into watching all your available guages while driving at anytime, then I'd suggest the torque app! I like to monitor my gauges at all times, so the scanguage was the tool for the job in my case. Keep it plugged in and it's there as soon as u start the rig, in a nice little package, easy to mount where ever you like and you are able to monitor up to four guages at once. Up to like 30 different gauge options or something crazy like that. Then so many other things it can do too, things you would never even thought of. I love mine! Hell it even tells you shit like real time fuel consumption and real time cost of fuel used! Several different trip meters on and on all kinds of stuff. Plus of course being a code reader. This day and age its a must to have a code reader with these newfangled rigs we drive around. Plus if a buddy or whatever needs to read or clear a code u can unplug it and slap it in their rig read the code clear it and put it back in yours. Easy shmeezy!

Hey guys thanks for all the informative, lots of useful input. I am not the greatest at replying as I'm working very long days on a farm right now... Oh and it's got 172,xxx. It does shift firmly, sometimes rolling to a stop and light turns lightly press on gas going about twenty it will kinda sloppily harshly downshift. I have learned to compensate and now got my dad foot working to where I can keep it smooth. Thing has been well taken care of it's obvious but I just don't know... I definitely like the sounds of ultrascan I'll be looking for one asap then. If not I'll least get the phone adapter. I think I have a YouTube account, working on that now.... Took the video last night. To whom asked it idles at 1100

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
There's no way a little engine like that could rev that high and not blow up. Your tach if off buddy. Them kind of RPM's are for race cars, my drag car revs that high, but it's built for it. No way a stock street engine could do that. They have rev limiters to stop it from going that high thankfully.

I'd love to believe that but I can't go over half throttle for it to shift by like 5 grand, u can heart her scream in the video. I'm going to take it to a shop I guess, I think someone had to tune the computer to eliminate the rev limiter. No? T
