Aftermarket bump stops & Airbags

I am trying to come up with a setup that I can have the offroader I want with my Icon lift kit and All Pro leaf springs but still be able to tow. I am trying to figure out if there is a way I can mount some Timbrens where the stock bump stops were and maybe mount some airbags elsewhere. If I can find a spot for the airbags I can leave them completely deflated when I am not towing and the Timbrens will do their magic. Whenever I need to tow something I can just fill up the bags. Any thoughts on if this is possible and if so where there might be a spot to mount some airbags instead of mounting them where the stock bump stops were.

 

I think there are a few folks around with the Dakar leaf packs which are supposed to be a balance between offroad flex and cargo capacity.

There is also the a system from Light Racing called the Jounce Shocks. Another couple steps up (in price and design) from the Timbrens.

I think you'll be trying to fit a lot of stuff under/into the suspension if you try to get both in there. Best of luck tho!!

 

Not sure why you need both but Air Lift bags mount just forward of the bump stops so they might just fit together. ???

 

Only reason I thought Timbrens wouldn't suffice is I was under the assumtion that they like most aftermarket leaf packs were for offroading benefit. Figure with the airbags I would be able to have the best of both worlds.

 

I've had the above airbags on my truck for 4 years now without a single problem.

 

How much were you guys Air Lift brand bags?

 

Mine were $189 plus $209 for the controller.

 

So they are pretty stout. They just don't seem to appear as stout as say the Firestone RideRite ones.

 

I drag a nose heavy 20 foot boat and trailer(4000 lb. or so) all summer and it tows level at 40-50 lbs. Max capacity is 100. The only downside if there is one is because of the low air volume in the bags, just checking them for pressure causes you to lose 5 lbs. so it's a little tricky setting the pressure on them manually...hence the reason I bought the controller. Decent warranty as I recall. I would buy them again.

 

Did you buy yours online directly from them or another distributor?

 

I bought the bags (59561) from Truckaddons.com and the controller (25812) from Ebay. Google Air Lift's part numbers. Someone's always got a deal going.

 

That's a nice setup. I have a 21' MasterCraft and I test drove a stock Taco,4x4 TRD off road and i did get a lot of bouncy bounce with the boat back there.

So, these airbags will stop a lot of that from happening? someone also said i would need a WD( i assume Weight Distributing hitch?) as well?

 

Mine handles fine with no WD or trailer brakes. You still know you're towing something but the truck rides and handles great. No saggy butt either!

 

That's Great, and nice boat. I usually tow behind a MH, so i don't feel it as much. I really like your color! The new Tacoma colors i think are poo. You have a beautiful deep red and there was a Dark Blue then too. Now they have this light blue and light red and I don't like em. Almost makes me want to buy used.

What year is your truck? and is it the 4x4?

I worry that if i don't get 4x4 i might get stuck on a slippery ramp...? Mine weighs 5700#

 

5700 pounds dry? If so you may need something bigger. The Taco can handle it for a little but for the long haul you may want a bigger truck. Rule of thumb is don't regularly tow something greater than 80% of manufacturers tow rating putting it at 5200 pounds

Tks. It's Barcelona Red Metallic on an '09. Funny thing is I didn't like it that much when I drove it off the lot. The metallic sets it off IMO. It's a TRD Sport (4 by with an LSD rear). All of the ramps that I use are fairly new and purpose built so 2 lo is all I ever use pulling 4000 lbs. or so. That said, I would NEVER own a 2WD truck to launch a boat although many do.

I can make a few of them walk up the ramp...

 

Without the people, which I assume you don't haul too far down the road if at all it puts you at less than the 5200 pound rule of thumb limit so with trailer breaks I would think the taco would be able to handle that without much effort, for peace of mind I would suggest a tranny cooler which comes with the tow package.
