Freedom of religion

Whenever I hear the name of a new law or initiative, I generally assume that its intent is the opposite of its name until I can find evidence to the contrary.

 

In my opinion, any religious or nonreligious belief isn't ofensive as long as it doesn't hurt others. Unfortunately though, there are a lot of extremists out there that shouldn't be allowed their religious freedom because they want to hurt others.

Sorry. I meant it in a general anti-politician sort of way, not to point a finger at a particular party.

 

Ok. I get protecting the businesses as well though. I am all for equal rights for everyone but just as the baker example that keeps coming up. We have some fanatic ask a Jewish baker for a swastika on a cake. The law requiring them to comply I would view as unfair. Just the same as me getting a request for a swastika and some choice words about jews or African Americans, I would have no problem telling them to fuck off. I would be pretty upset if I was required by law to make that decal for them on religious grounds.

 

I agree, but it sure would be nice if some moderate folks on all sides made it to the news. All we seem to hear about is the extreme. I guess it sells papers (do those still exist?) and gets us to tune in on the tv.

I generally think that most people are the same. We all want shelter, food, and water. We're different colors/cultures, but we all have the same basic needs.

 

Explain to me why anyone that didn't want to make a cake with something offensive would have to make the cake? I don't know why we need a new law for that.

 

Well, it sure propmpts you to consider how and why those news are selected. Because good news are also reported. But only on a fixed set of countries/subjects. You can build a whole world of ignorance by reporting some events and completely avoiding other.

I wonder if this is what happening.

Everyone likes to overthink things. Why should there be a law that even suggests how a cake is made? It should be simple.

Nah it'll be fine because attacking the thinking of others & pigeon holing them with race & sex is always cool. At least it's a living example (tho slightly different) of the thread topic.

 

I just don't see how religion is under attack. You're free to practice whatever you want even if others don't agree with it.

 

Everybody who keeps reiterating the same narrative about the law being "discrimination" should think outside the box once in a while. Women can't drive in Saudi Arabia yet people will bitch and moan about letting businesses decide who they let patronize their establishments.

Let me tell you a little secret...

The businesses that discriminate will not last in the free market. If Chick fl A stopped serving the gays, the company would suffer. If McDonald's refused to serve black people, the company would suffer. And I guarantee you, there will be something else right across the street happily serving the gays and blacks, taking advantage of McDonald's and Chick fl A's bad business model. If I want my business to discriminate, I should be able to do that. But I should be aware that a policy of that nature will probably wreck every aspect of my business.

 

Or big business.

I'm the small bus, but I co-run a dart league. I have people that I hate with every fiber of my being due to their character and dishonesty, but I allow them to participate unless and until they commit an offense on league time.
