    Hey all,
My 09 taco has left me stranded twice now, check engine light appears along with the tcs light, it will run real rough for about a km and then it will shut off, it will start back up long enough to shut back off again, 12 engine codes come up, 2 codes for each coil pack show up, if the truck sits for about an hour the codes will clear and the truck will start and run perfect until the next time... Truck is an 09 trd sport 4.0l auto, both times it died the temp was above freezing after being extremely cold in the morning and also after driving approx. 1.5 hours.
I'm really hoping someone has some insight, my dealership up here in NS has never had this issue.
    Thanks, Cory

possible frozen stuff finally heating up and evaporating up into a connector or something causing a short.

    What 12 codes come up?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Plugs only last 30k miles and would be a good place to start. Then clean the MAF and TB

    yes do all this

change plugs (a too-large spark gap from old copper plugs stresses the coils)
    clean throttle body
    clean maf

id guess previous owner never changed plugs at all and at 130km should be due changing for the 3rd time. Check the plugs and if you have Denso on one side and Ngk on the other side chances are they were never changed.Start with that and maf TB cleaning as said in a previous post. Those codes are all for ignition coil circuit malfunction.

List all the codes given. Not just code numbers.

Anything like coil b secondary circuit ???

    What scanner did you use.

Can you get the freeze frame data ???

Yes it was coil a,b,c,d,e,f secondary circuit, it wouldn't freeze frame the data

Sounds like you have a coil going out.
One coil will shut down a engine.

Toyota scan tool can save the freeze frame and help pick the right one.

You can try to ohm out the coils but more often unless it's real hot and dead it's going to be tough to get the coils out and ohmed before it comes back on line.

Why would it bring up a code for every coil pack of it's only one faulty one??

Because it can. It's electronic. You short out an ecu circuit strange things happen internally.

As a first check I would look at the tops of the coils and look for one that doesn't look like the others.
    Cracked
    Discolored
    Bulge
    Start there.
You may want to consider letting someone do a little diag on it. Can save you money in the long run.
I'm not saying it's 100% a coil. I'm saying I have fixed this issue with one coil. The same issue was fixed with an ecu. I'm sure other demons will throw things like this.
I'm hoping its a one coil issue but some testing, checking, and driving will be needed.

Absolutely, I really hope it's just a coil and not the ecu...
I did erase the codes and one remained, coil F but it only happened once so I will try getting it hot and ohming it out.

    Perfect.
That's exactly what needed to be done.
    #6 coil.
    Halfway there buddy.

If it was me you can do this one of 2 ways.
Get a new coil for #6 or swap the coil for another hole and see if it changes

    be sure to change plugs!!!

you need to find out if a broken or melted plug is under any coil

Just did a bit of playing around by unplugging individual coils and it did not simulate the issue I'm having, it just ran rough and brought up the code for a bad coil pack

    It won't
Has to be all together and driven.
    Ecu measures circuit stability etc.
Your not doing anything but wasting time.
You got your first clue. Run with it.
