Hell yes, definitely can do! Makes me happy that someone is interested to see! Been tons of work!

They are just plain red oak, but they were stained this kinda ugly orange-honey color. Also, they have these annoying little grooves in them, that are supposed to be decorative I guess, but I really like things more plain looking, or I like the shaker trim style on cabinets. So we experimented with our bathroom/laundry cabinets (same ones as in the kitchen). First we used a router and built a sled for it to basically remove wood from the doors until they were a smooth surface (no more grooves). Then we bought red oak and milled it up into shaker trim pieces and attached to the doors, then poly'd with many coats. They look great, except you can see the seam on the side where our new trim meets the existing cabinet door. So even though you kinda have to look for that flaw, we decided not to do this in our kitchen. Figured when we go to sell the house someday, that seam showing would give it away that refinishing them was a DIY job. I will definitely post pics, would love to get opinions on whether to go ahead with my beloved shaker trim in spite of the damn seam, or whether to play it safe and keep the stupid grooves/skip the shaker trim.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Let me tell ya a little story 'bout a Girl named Jen

and a poor Toyota truck that won't start up again

the neighbors next door is where this piles gotta be

Try it one more time Eric, baby would ya please?

So he lifted up the hood and he fiddled with some wires

Oh my God... Dude, is that a fire?

The truck roared to life with a sputter and a glug

gasoline fumes and a knock and a thud

Jen said to Eric "Get the Devil outta there

before you meet your maker or you need a wheelchair"

If this keeps up I'm sure to lose my mind

baking all these cookies until the end of time.

    TOYOTA. Truck that is.

Yeah, everything seems funny when you're drinking, meanwhile mugs like me are stuck at work watching a bunch of machines turning dead dinosaurs into heat.

Swapping an engine in a 1st gen Tacoma takes everything you got.

Finding out something's wrong afterwards really sucks a lot.

This thread might have to stay.

    Sometimes you wanna go

    Where everybody knows your name.

And they're always glad ya came.

You wanna be where you can see,

Our troubles are all the same.

You wanna be where everybody knows your name.

You wanna go where people know,

    people are all the same.

You wanna go where everybody knows your name.

:D Well I thought it was pretty good!

C'mon, who else has one?? This game is fun! :D

EDIT: In other news, guess what I am about to do? Go deliver a starter to the mechanic!! Definitely feeling hopeful about this. Hope with me TW!!

EDIT #2: Where's DP to bitch about all my edits? I miss that. Anyway, guess what else is going on? We just made a major decision!!!! And I think I might actually stick with it and not change my mind!! We are thinking we'll trade our Civic in for a 4Runner - something around ~$15K, and hopefully ~10 yrs old or newer with 100K or less on the clock. Then we can use that to do road trips. And........................drumroll please.................we are seriously thinking about keeping the Taco, whether the issue is fixed or not, then just using it to do home improvements, local errands, etc. Just no long road trips to remote places basically, since we can't totally trust it, and especially if the problem doesn't get fixed (but the 4 Runner will have that covered, so it doesn't matter!). Even if the Taco's starting problem does get fixed, I wouldn't feel good about venturing far from home in it, after all that's been found wrong after the swap. But I would feel OK driving a few miles to pick up lumber and stuff like that! Hell, that's what being an AAA member is for, right? This way we have our road trip vehicle, and our home improvement vehicle. And for daily driving, sure, we are giving up the awesome MPG we get in the Civic, but Eric's commute is pretty short, and if I go back to work I'd look close to home too. So who cares? I'm excited guys, this plan could really work, even if the Taco doesn't get fixed! Then when the 4Runner is paid off, we can finally go for a new Taco! Maybe by then they'll change the design back to the 1st gen style, especially if we all bitch enough! Maybe we should ask everyone on TW to call Toyota corporate and request they go back to 1st gen design of Tacomas? :D

EDIT #3: Starter delivered to mechanic. Now time to hurry up and wait for the phone to ring. Please please please please please let this be it. Please. Pretty please.

EDIT #4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSLuEj99d0 I agree with Keakar, someone should definitely do the Gilligan's Island theme song. It is just too snappy and fun to overlook, plus who doesn't love that cheesy old show?

ok I just cheated this time , I copied the lyrics and changed it to fit.

here goes, and don't forget you have to be hearing the song in your head, it fits better that way.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful truck
That started from this missing electrode
    on this beloved Tacoma truck.

Eric was a mighty offroading man,
    Jen was brave and sure.
They brought it to an engine rebuild guy
For a simple engine swap, a simple engine swap.

    The bills started getting high,
    The tiny budget was blown,
The truck now has unsolvable hard star issues,
If not for the courage of our fearless duo
The taco would have been sold, the taco would have been sold.

    The troubleshooting drama goes on,
    With Eric,
    and Jen too,

    Here on Toyota World forums.

    da dum dum

The 4Runner is still dead. I think it is time to retrieve it and repair the harness myself. It has been at the shop since the middle of December. However, it is low on the priority list today.

Wait, I'm confused - the engine mechanics did dirty deeds cheap? That's the real kicker of the whole thing - we received lower quotes from others, but chose those jackasses because they stressed quality OEM parts and quality work so heavily, so we figured paying a little extra was worth it. Ha! Wish I would've known we were actually paying extra to have them dent our cam sensor and put our failing injectors back in

I do like Joan Jett though, so wherever you are headed with this ditty Mod, keep it going.........

Bummer! Sorry to hear this. Wonder if we both got screwed because we took our vehicles in around a major holiday? Like everybody working around that time was like, this sucks, I shouldn't have to be here right now, it's Christmas......then you figure places are more short staffed, with people taking off to visit family, etc. I bet that played a part in our situation at least. I hope you get the Runner straightened out soon, but I'm glad for you that it doesn't sound like it's a huge strain on you guys to be without it.

And Hetkind, if you sell it, can you please make sure you don't sell it to us? We may be 4Runner shopping in the near future, and the last thing we need is to wind up getting a 2nd one with a mystery problem! :D If you sell, you better interview all potential buyers and be sure they don't also happen to own a Taco with a mystery prob :D

I don't have a ditty to contribute but I have benefitted from following this thread. After reading DP's thoughts on fuel pump longevity and a variety of comments on which way to go about accessing it, I replaced mine (at 217k) after dropping the tank. No difficulties encountered.

I, too, love my taco lots.

Heres what I know bout a girl named Jen
With a pos truck thats got her at wits end
Bourbon, beers and Waylon are all thats keepin her sane
Or she would be at the 1st repair shop raisin some cain
Lucky for her shes got a nice neighbor with some tools
But the real deal is this truck is making us look like fools..
In her corner are her tw freinds
That have been here for over 2400 posts and always have an ear to lend.
Bake us some cookies, we'll talk about your truck
After 4 months of suggestions I think were almost outta luck...
Hopefully the neighbor can get this thing running straight
At least we have a thread where we can go to mental masterbate..
Pics of trailers, dogs, baked goods and bottles of liquor
Make this thread fun but we need to get a truck starting quicker.
Maybe some gas and a match is what she really needs
Stand around a burning truck roasting hotdogs and smoking washingtons legal weed..

something like a tribute to the old girl in her glory

to be honest I don't every remember seeing a "real" picture of it other then one tiny quarter sized picture you posted like 2000 posts ago

wouldn't hurt to see a picture of you as well so we know who it is we have been friends with for so long

ps - yes I liked your little diddly as much as the others
