In CA, how would the smog tech know if it's a OEM cat or an aftermarket? They go through thousands of cars and I don't think they can remember how OEM looks for every car.

they match the etched numbers on the cat with a data base, it something does not match its an instant fail and you flagged as having non legal parts.

This also goes with all aftermarket Air intakes and Headers.

you then have to go to special smog stations to get it fixed and certified as legal.

oh ok. But it just that I have never seen a smog tech crawl under the car and careful look at the cat to get the numbers when I go in for smog checks. They usually just take a peak under the car to see if there are cats. Most of the time for me, the smog tech never even looks underneath the car. They fiddle around with the gas cap and then do the smog test.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I never said it was only engine or mechanical problems. In fact I stated many other things can contribute to the failures. ;)

Not anymore unless he wants to lose his smog license.

California is cracking down hard on smog stations.

    You must be new here.

Stolen catalytic converters are an epidemic in California.

Happens all the time off any car they can get under.

Not to reuse. To harvest the internals for sale.

So many basic brain surgeons. They graduate from the same school as the insurance fraud guys, just a different major.

CA is fine. It's just a beautiful land. It's the people that run it that create the silly problems. And the folks that keep electing/re-electing them. So taking a look in the mirror, or at your neighbors, might be where the root cause lies?

Well, if you get more than a form letter response pointing you to your nearest dealership for service we'll all be stunned. At that mileage, they have no obligation. Maybe you'll be lucky and get a deeply discounted price for the parts. Fingers crossed!

Well, there's a consideration for fixing it. I mean you can't sell it w/o emissions passing, right? So you either discount it the cost of repairs, or spend the $ for the repairs to be able to sell it. If you do the latter, you might as well keep it and enjoy it?
