The 4.0 as it sits now was the original motor in the last generation 4 Runner in 2003. I had a 2004 4Runner and the motor in my 2015 taco is identical. The motor was updated with the arrival of the 2010 4Runner I believe with dual vvt but this update never transferred over to Tacco......much to Taco owner's dismay. At the very least, the 4.0 in your Taco is 13 years old.....perhaps older if found in other models like the Tundra. It's long in the tooth.

The spark plugs are not iridium - they have to be changed every 30K miles, according to the manual....

The advantage of the iridium spark plugs is the long life, they have no other advantage that I know. They use them on engines where changing the plugs is a PITA. The dealer wanted $450 to swap the plugs on my Highlander. I told the dealer i would do it myself. The back 3 plugs took me a long day to get to and change. Needed to remove the intake manifold, before you can do that you need to remove the mass air sensor, the throttle body, 12 vacuum hoses etc etc.

With the Taco I can get to the plugs without stripping the motor.

This is not the reason as the 2TR engine uses iridium plugs and they are not hard to replace at all...

I changed my plugs at 190k, I have 225k miles now. You're worrying about nothing
