I still say the best bang for the buck is a Yaris.

Harleys are great if you want to spend more time working on them than riding them.

True dat. Yamaha and Kawasaki Cruisers are half the cost and 10 time more reliable.

I honestly can't remember ever seeing a bike broken down on the side of the highway that wasn't a Harley.

    I'll take a look.

Had a Golf TDI. They're not reliable enough, and cost an arm and a leg.

    Nope

Lots of driving involved with the one that I'm considering. Don't want to wear out the truck.

Riding a bike in Houston is not going to happen.

Not going to lie, they're ugly but they're super reliable and get 39mpg (actual, not rated). And you can pick up a 2010 with about 50k on it for around $10,000. My family owns two. An 09 with 150k and an 08 with 200k. The 08 got a new serp belt at 125k and new rear shocks at 150k. Other than that, just oil changes, gas, and tires and they've never let us down. Haven't even changed the spark plugs (although we probably should pretty soon).

I like VW but the only reason I wouldn't consider them for a commuter is because I couldn't keep myself from modding them.

Well, my 05 had plenty of issues. Also, finding a mechanic that knows what the fuck they're doing with the TDI engine is tough. I have a great one, but he's not cheap.

Not having a manual transmission as an option doesn't do it for me.

I modded the hell out of my 05. :D

The Honda CR-Z looks interesting. I'll have to find out if I'm going to have to drive clients around.

Nevermind on the CR-Z. I didn't realize it had an electric motor as well. I just want something simple.
