David Thomson is a genius with statements like "we need 13,000 season ticket holders to stay viable" That way if things don't work out it's pretty easy for him to point to that statement if he needs to pull the plug. I remember right when they got the team TSN was talking about how the whole sale was propositioned as a "if Winnipeg supports us we will stay", deal rather than Thomson being the savoir of the Jets like the fans were talking about.

The guy is a successful businessman for a reason. Where is no question he has a challenge with his NHL franchise, I don't think for a second he would bother with it if he didn't feel it were viable. He is successful for a reason. The folks this franchise has put in place are incredibly bright.

Agreed, he moved to Winnipeg because a franchise can exist there and thrive. He was also smart enough to set up an exit plan early in the process though which is critical to him keeping his image and money intact.

If Harper wants to win the next election all he has to do is wear a Team Canada jersey and bitch slap Putin at the next leaders meeting they have, right on the podium.

    Oh, and GO FLAMERS.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Oilers win either but let's be honest, they'll be tasting LA's junk in the back of there throat again after tonight's game.

...at the end of the day, the reason True North were awarded the second coming of the Jets is because they played to Bettman's business model. The league has definite conditions that need be met before anyone receives a team. Hate Bettman all you want, he is no slouch and is doing a good job imo.

While most people were calling for Bettman's head back in the 90's, I couldn't care less that Jets moved out. The poor business structure of the league, rising salaries, the business model of the Winnipeg Arena, not to mention the weak Canadian dollar all compounded to make the operation a disaster. Then owner, Barry Shenkarow would have loved to sell the team locally, but no one stepped up(no surprise there) Local fans were willing to mortgage their fucking homes to keep the team. The tears and all were ridiculous. The ship was sinking. Getting out was perfect.

Jets 2.0 is a completely new animal. The people running the ship are much more tuned in. I still say the Jets leaving was ideal. It has set the stage for a much better experience.

I went to some games as a kid, WHA games included. The quality of the entire experience far exceeds what it used to be imo

I'd agree with you, except Bettman has kept teams in the Southern States that had the same sort of economic problems and plain old lack of business support problems as Winnipeg simply because of his hardon for trying to expand the game. He let the team go from Atlanta because the Atlanta ownership pretty much made a situation where they did not want the hockey team in their facility anymore. They had to move it.

Bettman is a business man for sure, but he also has his weaknesses. He loves hockey in the Southern US and could give two shits about the Canadian teams that are the source of most of his players and fans. He'd do anything to help out a New York, LA, Florida, or Arizona, but watch how little he will do to help out Montreal, TO, or Vancouver should they ever have financial problems. The only time he helped out the Canadian teams was because of the NHLPA. The PA didn't want to lose 2-3 teams in Canada without good homes for those teams somewhere else, Bettman could of given two shits but he was in a corner with the PA that he has to work with.

Perhaps there is some truth to what you say, but I am not convinced that is the case. Should detrimental issues in Montreal, Vancouver or Toronto ever arise it is likely the entire league is going down for whatever unlikely reason. As you have pointed out, these market help prop up the league.

I am not going to sit here and argue that Bettman is a 'good guy', but I do believe he very much wants to see the league succeed. I don't believe his motives are so much desire driven as they are business driven. There is nothing for him to gain by failing to spite 'Canadian markets'.
