Make sure you have the wiring and all. Might also check to see if your ecu is able to read it. I could see more underlying issues/obstacles with it.

The 8.4 with an ARB is stronger than the 8" OR diff with an e locker.

 

I would wire it with it being connected to the factory wiring. That way I'm able to use it anytime I want. Im thinking it can be done still haven't looked at it yet.

 

We all know the 8.4 is stronger. But cost is were I'm at. I can do this swap with very little out of pocket. Some new u bolts and brake fluids, plus a day to do the work. Wiring should be pretty straightforward as I'm a pretty good electrician.

I can't really recommend any shops here in this area. For sure there aren't any that specialize in just Tacomas. Many guys on this list do their own work. You first have to decide what you want to do, to satisfy your own particular needs (everybody is different).

I don't know any good shoos in sac that do only Toyota. There is a few shops that will take your money. I suggest reading a ton about different set ups. There is a few good stickies and threads on lifts. Your best bet is to gather the parts for your lift and then find someone to help you install it.

What these guys said regarding lift. There are cheap lifts that ride crappy and cause other probs, and there are good lifts that actually enhance performance, which, or course, cost more. Really do homework first, even of you do pay someone else to do it. This way, you will not what the issues are, and what parts may, or may not, be needed.

Also decide up front how you will use the truck. This is critical. Consider lift and tires in conjunction, even if you can't affoard to do them both at the same time. Each can/will affect choices for the other, so don't paint yourself into a costly corner with one or the other.

A lot of guys here could help you install a lift if you want to get your hands dirty, and you can learn a lot from it.

You can order tires and wheels from online vendors.

I highly recommend Radial Tire service on Cottage Way in general for wheel work. They do tons of work for the auto dealers on Fulton Ave. I think they can pretty much order anything as far as wheels and tires go, even beat prices, and their service is excellent. I've had then compress/assemble my OME coilovers so I could just R&R them, and done strut work on the wife's jetta. They also dialed in my balances and alignments when other shops could not.

My first expereince (before I installed my lift) with them was when another shop could not balance my stock TRD aluminum wheels wiht NEW Michelin AT2s, a very mild AT. I had vibes ~60 mph. Radial said they could rebalance without force balance or beads. When they handed it back, I said I can't tell if it is fixed until I get it on the freeway. They said no prob., if I'm happy with it, call them back and give them my credit card # then to charge it.

They nailed it, and I gladly called them back. Customer for life with service and attitude like that.

 

Not saying you didn't know that Or doubting your ability? There's just electronics shoved into a lot of components nowadays. Props if ya knock it out. Find a junked 4x4 OR. You keep the rear axle, I'll snag the front assembly

I know you are just looking out. The subject has been beaten up on serval forums. Its really not that hard to do if your good with electrical. I think the hardest part is going to the brakes.lol
I will Need a locker switch and a spdt relay. I found a way to use the dash light really easy.

I already have a deal lined up, that's going to be a trade no cash on my part. That's the only reason I'm considering it. Maybe we can do a write up on it. Any volunteers for camera man slash writer.

 

The ecu only controls when you can use it. So if you don't wire it to it you don't have that part to worry about. Its the same as the inverter the ecu doesn't let you use 400w while in drive. Some safety features are just plane stupidity.

 

I'm out by Sly Park Lake in the Placerville Area, but my Lady lives in Natomas so I spend a lot of road time between here and there.

 

Ted what's wrong with the front diff. I have seen those for cheap. Pre runner guys buy them to convert then never do.

Why not just sell the pre runner and get a used TRD off road.

I bought the truck originally for reliability, coming out of college. Started doing stuff to it once the warranty was up. Never really 'needed' 4x4 always rode with others. The 'expo' bug hit me lately. More so than rock crawling. I can still enjoy off road trails and fire roads to camp sites with my locked rear end. Surprised myself a couple weeks ago. I would rather keep my truck, knowing its past, and slowly compile the parts. I enjoy wrenching. Plus having something unique and built myself is more satisfying. Plus... That Manual TCase
