Interior Magic Eraser Damage

Any detailers that can offer some advice? The upper dark gray perforated parts of my interior door panels on my 2015 DC had all these glossy looking spots all over them that looks like Armor All improperly applied on delivery? I tried to clean it off but it did not seem to want to budge so someone told me to use a magic eraser. I did that and now its all dull scuffed areas. Tried to re Armor All among other things but it looks awful and like its permanently scuffed. Any ideas?

 

Sorry to hear man, if you look wrong at the interior plastic I swear it will scratch.

 

Love me some magic eraser, but it can remove the shine from a surface. Armorall and other type products will only be a temporary coverup, most likely if you want it back to OEM you will need to buy the part and replace.

or... you can play dumb and ask the dealer , they may replace.

 

Had some shiny spots on my door panels when I took delivery and made the same assumption about armor all. A month later the spots were still there. Took some hassle with the dealer, but got the panels replaced under warranty. Good luck.

 

I looked at replacing just that piece of the door panel. Another wrong assumption. The door panel is all one unit according to parts breakdown with the exception of the tweeter pod cover, handle, etc. $473.00. I may just go at it with some plastic polish like Novus or a little more of the hair of the dog that bit me. Try to even it out with the eraser? I'm so pissed at myself

 

you could also ask the dealer who they use for trim repairs? (most likely used to fix up the used vehicles before they resell).

we have a company we use at work for doing small trim repairs and they can do a half decent job. would be a heck of a lot cheaper than 400+ for a new door panel.

 

Jesus, who told you to use an abrasive on plastic?

 

I have those same weird glossy spots on my 2015. They won't come off even with 1Z Plastic Cleaner, which itself is a strong cleaner. I figured they were just an abnormality in manufacturing.

Sorry to say that the magic eraser is basically super fine grit sandpaper. You could try removing the panel and spraying it with some 50% gloss clearcoat from a spray can to even things out/.

I have the same spots, looks like the windows were left open and it kept dripping in the same spot. Won't come off either, I just said screw it and ignore it.

 

Try MEGUIAR'S Quick Interior Detailer Cleaner!Hope it's not permanently scuffed!Never use Armor All and never let someone else use it on your vehicle!Just my opinion.Good luck Harley2!

 

I have that too, it works great. It could mask the issue.

Whatever you do OP, don't use it (Magic Eraser) on fabric. It contains bleach and will ghost spot your fabric seats.

The Meguires is awesome. Only product I use on my dash parts.

With that said if you have changed the surface texture with the eraser there isn't any spray that will fix it. You can try to erase the entire surface and make the damage uniform because the magic eraser is an abrasive. That is how it works. Replacement may be your only option.

I would also contact the dry eraser manufacturer and ask for their advise for a remedy.

 

This isn't true. Magic erasers are made of melamine foam that is activated by water...it becomes like very fine sandpaper so it scuffs up the stain into the little cavities of the sponge. They work really well and don't have any toxic chemicals in them actually.

 

No shit, I never used it, but went by what my wife has said in the past. I'll have to let her know.

Worst case OP, have it painted flat black. Won't be perfect, but at least it will be better looking than scuffed plastic.

 

What can I say? I have access to all of human knowledge at my fingertips. Why not use it?

I did know it was a Melamine though, I'm a materials scientist.

I Googled to see for myself, and that was the first line.

 

I will use magic erasers on the exterior paint when someone has rubbed up against another car or gotten too close to a garage door opening knowing that they will scuff the paint just a bit. Then I use a random orbital polisher and a product designed to polish the paint and it brings it back looking nice. Any pictures of the spots and locations?

 

A plastic polish would work better. The stuff made to polish soft top windows would be perfect. BestTop sells a great product that would make the OPs issue all but disappear. But do the entire black area of the panel so it is uniform.
