0, 5, 10W30 is all pretty much the same at operating temps. Cold cranking flow is a little different though. I run Mobil One HM 5W30 with 5-7K intervals or every six months.

Bottom line the lower viscosity oils have only one purpose slightly better fuel economy. The 0W viscosity really does not exist when a Saybolt viscosity measuring device is used because it is based on time and you can't have any flow of oil in zero seconds. So it is based on pour point the difference between 0W and 5W is about 10* so if you need your oil to be viscous at -50* then you should consider a 0W oil other wise you can probably get away with 5W down to about -40 yes this is the temp that the oil will provide protection at startup. Most oils sold in this country as synthetic can not be sold in Europa or Asia as a full synthetic due to truth in product laws.

Go look up some tests of BITOG. The readings don't lie. 0W is still less viscous than 5W even at 70F. Some dude did the tests in his Corvette. It was years ago when I looked it up so I don't have the link and I'm not gonna look.

No way id use 0w/30. Less viscous than allowable by the manual just screams damage in summer to me for a motor that calls for a heavier weight

It's what I always ran in my Outbacks, I could swear I noticed it crank easier in cold temperatures.

I've been running the 5w-30 extended performance in my Tacoma. Longest interval has been about 8000 miles and it had consumed about a cup of oil when I checked it at 7500. Can't complain about that.

Usually I change it around 6000-7000 but I got a little lazy because it was winter and I didn't want to do it in the cold the last time.

I usually use Mobil1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30, but after reading a little bit about running Shell Rotella Diesel Oil I might try that. Although I have never had a problem with Mobil1 and I change it about every 6 or 7k miles depending on when I have time.

Do they make the Rotella Diesel in 5W-30? I would assume no?

No but its the 5w part you need to worry more about the -30 or -40 is not harmful

I run Castrol Edge full synthetic 5w30 (why 5w30? because thats what Toyota recommends) with OEM filter and change it every 5k miles. I like the 5k interval because it's easy to remember when you need a change. Every time my odo hits a 5 or 10 I know it needs an oil change.

I may try the 5W-40 next go round.

Assuming the price isn't much different than the Mobil 1.
