You'd be awfully surprised at how much the sound files are doctored on the commercials.

Had a nice conversation at one time with the audio engineer for the Ford F-150 Torture Test videos. Heavily modified audio here ... F-150 Torture. Said that the only thing that was pretty well left alone was Mike Rowe's voice.

Incorrect. Exhaust systems should have NO back pressure. Tuning the exhaust to maximize scavenging is the key. The new Pentastar engine from Chrysler has a fully tuned exhaust system, and the best after market systems yield a 5 hp loss. Given that exhaust systems have to meet certain sound requirements, and manufactures are on the cheap side, they do this by using baffled mufflers, which can fuck up the inherent scavenging designed in the exhaust, OR, they are forced to make it fit a certain way, and for a certain cost, thus killing some of the scavenging. Aftermarket exhaust systems can use a "better" muffler to make this less noticeable, but the best gains come from a properly tuned exhaust system. As for the "Atkinson" cycle thing.......Its still an Otto cycle engine, that mimics an "Atkinson" cycle when under low loads, by using the intake valves to reduce compression.

It's so strange seeing the tach peg at redline but the speedometer keeps climing.

Interesting explanation of what Toyota calls "Atkinson" Chris is technically right regarding the cycle and design.

Have you ever driven one? Its such a weird feeling. We had an Altima rental car at a show once, always seemed like it was about to blow up.

The CVT in the Altima, and Prius for that matter.......and Rogue, Morano, etc., aren't very refined, or programmed very well. The CVT in my Accord is incredibly impressive, however for 2015 Honda reprogrammed its behavior, and performance characteristics. That being said, it is an interesting driving experience.

Did you feel like you were getting better mpg's or had the power to do what you wanted...or was it just different? Did it affect handling in anyway?

I'm waiting for the 2017 Tacoma! (Want to give the 2016 a chance to shake out all the bugs)

Are you asking about engine, or the CVT transmission?

Both...I know you can adjust the transmission but the feeling of the output of the engine thru the xmsn is what I was trying to feel out. I've read alot of your post so I'm not sure I'm able to put into words what I'm trying to say. I guess is how did it feel to you? Normal (whatever that is) or did you feel like you had plenty of power to get the speed you needed or the job done you were trying to accomplish?

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
None of you guys have ever ridden a snowmobile or an ATV? They are the same way. At full throttle the transmission slips just enough to let the motor be at the right RPM for max power and pretty much just stays there while your speed increases

The Altima has belts and the Accord has a chain right? The altima belts would smell like burning.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
That's pretty cool  I was a little baffled on how Toyota was getting such good power numbers from the Atkinson motor...

So it appears that when power is needed, the variable valve timing will adjust so the engine operates like a typical Otto cycle engine. It can then dynamically adjust to operate like an Atkinson cycle engine as needed.

Like Ford's eco boost, I predict rated MPG's and observed MPG's are going to be a little off for those with a heavy foot.

Honestly, I have always hated CVT's. They never gave a "connected" feeling, and felt as though the power was transferred via a rubber band. That being said, the CVT in the Accord is dam near perfect. Torque converter seems to lock up at around 20 mph, and stays locked, until you come to a stop. Under normal driving, RPM's never go above 2k rpm. Brisk driving never goes above 3k rpm, and seems to mimic an auto with a shit load of gears, as rpm's have a definitive "drop" as you are accelerating. The power delivery feels just as connected to your foot, as if it was a really good auto tranny. If you need to pass, you push on the throttle, and revs jump immediately to the perfect spot to give the desired acceleration.
