Does this feature keep the vehicle from sliding back on a hill after releasing the brake at a stop? If so, it's not doing a very good job as my truck still slides backward on some moderate hills and the Traction Control kicking in scaring everyone else in the truck.

    are you driving a manual?

I'm confused as to what you are experiencing. Traction control kicking in?

Are you taking off on a hill rolling backwards and getting scared and dumping the clutch to take off?

On my 2012 automatic it does not allow the truck to roll backwards at all.

Hill start assist allows a manual truck to start without the clutch engaged and you instantly start moving uphill. Wouldn't use it on street though.

Never mind. I'm talking about clutch start cancel.

HAC is supposed to continue holding the brakes after you've taken your foot off the brake pedal, up to 5 seconds. Truck shouldn't be rolling back at all. With older trucks the feature works transparently with no indication. On newer models the logic may have changed to manual activation - you may have to press hard on the brake pedal until an advisory light comes on in the dash.

    wrong

    some mis-info on this thread.

Here is how Hill Start Assist works on my 2013 automatic

you do not mash any pedal , it is always on no matter what. it takes a really steep hill for it to activate
    -
on regular paved roads auto tranny will hold me on all but the steeper hills,
where idle speed of motor vs tranny holds me there.

on steeper paved I will roll backward a bit, but very slowly. very very slowly but i do roll....I can hold with brake but let go and creep back

on extreme steeps... I hold with brake then let go of brake, it rolls back more but then the brake controller intervenes and you hear a boatload of brake actuator noise while it holds you, then rolls you back a bit, then holds again....it seems like the system is not working but it is working as designed. it never holds for more than 1 second before it lets you creep back

it is an assist, not a hold-in-one-spot
    -------------------------------------------------------
no you don't mash the pedal to engage this, if you have it, it automatically works you just have to be on a really really steep hill for it to kick on....

you'll creep back, stop, creep back, stop,....forever until you hit the gas

if you are not creeping back then hill start assist is not active, something else is holding you there like engine speed

This is different from the information Toyota shows in the Youtube videos. I'll give it a try on a steep hill. Do you see a dedicated indicator light or just the regular VSC light come on?

Why is this even needed? Esp for an Automatic Transmission.

Maybe I am just old and jaded, but have driven manual transmissions all across this great land of ours and have never needed a " Hill Start Assist " even in San Francisco, CA.

    Yes, yes you are.

But if so, then so am I. :D

Unfortunately even my little base truck has lots of things I don't need. :(

I'm still confused. I need to stop on a hill and see what my truck does. I release the brakes and take off. Don't remember rolling back. Still don't understand what the issue is.

not for me. My street will do it, and one time, the little "lip" where my dads driveway enters his garage made it kick in. My front tires were on it and when i released my brakes the hill assist worked. For me, any hill will turn it on after my truck rolls back a foot or so. Maybe some trucks are more sensitive.
