It just gets better all the time. Our faithful government is now in the process of approving a bill that would put an extra tax for the purchase of soda and juice drinks. Will this cure the obesity problem in America for adults and children? Most likely no. What it will do is cause a lot of anger.

The only way we'll cure it is to convince our fat-asses that it's better to get up off the couch and DO something rather than sit and watch other people do things on TV. Either way, it's not the government's job.

That's retarded. If they have to tax anything...it should be things like alcohol, cigarettes, restaurants, entertainment, etc. Tax things that are not necessities.

Here in PA - we don't pay 'sales' tax on necessities such as food (non-restaurant) and clothing.

True, people do still smoke, but as a Resp. Therapist for 12 years I can say w/o a doubt more people are trying to quit & seeking our help than ever before. Taxing soda will not cure obesity its an epidemic in this country. However, raising the price of sodas and fruit drinks might cause some people to cut back their intake and will generate revenue to fund healthcare for their fat asses. Just my 2 cents as someone who deals with this shit everyday @ work.

Thats a big part of the problem, people see soda as a need, its not its a want big difference. We are all addicted to caffeine & processed high fat food.

Actually, most of the items you drink/eat are sweetened with high frutose corn syrup and not regular sugar. I didn't believe it until I looked at some packages. ;)

But, no, taxing that stuff will not fix the problem. You've gotta get up and MOVE and eat less. Easier said than done, sometimes, though.

I would be fine with that too if the majority of them were not on Medicare/Medicaid/Disability and I didn't have to work so hard to pay their bill. We all foot the bill for people who dont work & take no responsability for their own health, it makes me sick. I cant afford to go to the ER unless I am dying but I see people all the time with no insurance or job for that matter come in 2-3/week for stupid bullshit, cause they know they will never pay the bill anyways who cares. These are the same pts who treat us like shit & want their cola & ham sandwhich STAT. Sorry for the long post but this shit really pisses me off!!!!

I don't think it'd help. What I'd really like to see, even though I don't think it'll ever happen, is insurance companies (Medicaid/care included) start giving incentives for healthier lifestyles. For example, offering heavily discounted gym memberships if you attended X number of times per month, as well as providing diet counselling. I do really believe that, in the end, they would end up saving money simply by reducing more serious diseases/issues down the road.

Sadly, most people, especially poor, don't know how to eat properly. On top of that, it costs more money to eat healthily than it does to eat crap. Create financial incentives and provide people the tools to fix that.

Sodas and juice drinks (I'm assuming that "juice drinks" != 100% fruit juice) are not necessities.

As far as curing obseity, eat less exercise more. Its not rocket science & another tax is not going to do squat.

I wouldn't consider soda a necessity. I haven't drank it in over 2 years! :yay:
