I live in Austin, Tx where it's humid most of the time, but absolutely no salt as we don't get snow. Should I be worried about the rust issue since we do get rain? I would hope to think not, but just want to make sure before my taco gets any age to it.

Thanks a million to all of those that makes this site addicting and interesting.

Since you live in Texas, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Unless you put your tacoma in a totally sealed 'bubble' and keep it there - there's no way to get away from certain corrosion & rust. It's gonna happen and those of us in the salt belt, it'll happen a lot sooner & faster.

On average, I would think everyone should get atleast 100K miles or more out of these trucks without things falling apart from rust. Even the 1st gen rust warrantee non-survivors can probably vouche for getting 100K or more. If you keep the truck that long and can get 200K or more - then you're probably within the minority.

    Only a 100k?!?

I bought the tacoma without looking at the issues due to the fact that i heard of these things "lasting forever". Very dissappointing to hear that it will start falling apart before 200k if i'm really lucky.

I guess I will start thinking about undercoating even though i don't live in the "rest belt"

    Crap....

Just crawl underneath your truck on a regular basis and see if you have any rust. If you do, then treat those areas. If you do a search, then you should be able to see what others have done to protect their trucks.

The truck is a few months off the lot and about 3k miles on it now. About how often would you crawl underneath to peep it out?

    Thanks,

Do you change your own oil? Check it when you do that.

Get some spray undercoating. About 5 or 6 rattle cans, and spray the key areas. I did mine and it seems, so far, to be effective. This may not be a cure, but a great, inexpensive preventative. It is also effective as a sound-deadener.

What would be the key areas?

    Thanks for the advice!

you in texas you don't have to worry to much about rust...

if you are worried you can always get your truck rust proofed...linex or rhino lining of some sort...

i'm located in las vegas but my truck is on the mountains every weekend cause I'm an avid snowboarder...my truck isn't rust proofed but I have no rust appearing as of yet...my truck is an '06 and will be 4 years old in 5 days...:) no problems here for me...so you should be good

I have a year on my truck with seeing alot of winter salt. No rust issues as of yet. However I'll be getting mine Krown undercoated just to be safe this season.

Yes, the weld points, but concentrate on the frame. Wait until you have dry weather and just spray the frame and whatever soundproofing you want. Get as many cans as you can afford (5, 6 or up to 8) and use it all. Get everything you can, except the exhaust and the aluminum heat shields. The better quality rattlecan undercoating has better sound-deadening qualities to it, but more pricey.

Think where road gravel will erode the underside paint, and get them well with the undercoat. :D

There are many facilities that will undercoat your taco, but it is best to do it yourself. Just prepare to get undercoat tar all over yourself!!!

As an addendum, try to not spray any fittings on the brakes, or anything you may want to dink with later. But get all the metal NOW.

No need to worry about rust in Austin...keep the underside clean and it'll be good for a long, long time.
