I think this should have been the first one they showed. It makes the lines look much better. At first I wasn't sure, and this configuration has sold me.

Omg that looks even bigger than the current DCLB ... jeezus.... but honestly, if the grille was just smaller this truck would look fantastic.

I was at the NYIAS yesterday, the driveline looks nearly the same as the 2nd gen. The exhaust cross over is slightly different with a smoother bend in the Y pipe and the pipe diameter is alittle larger.... theres also some more random braces bolted onto the frame to stiffen it up alittle I guess, frame looks the same, front and rear diffs look exactly the same as does the frame in its basic construction. The rear leafs are the same with 4 leafs, still coil over struts in the front, control arms are nearly the same, but the front skid plate looks different... but the oil pan looks exactly like the current truck.... No open hood and absolutely no engine power specs.... I took some pictures of the underside but for some reason my image hosting site will not let me upload them. The truck is generally just an uglier rebodied 2nd gen with a few drivetrain tweaks and a slightly more powerful engine. Im going to estimate that the 3.5 will new around 270hp at the crank, and probably around the same number for the torque figure... so about a 15% increase over the current 4.0 1gr-fe, and all of these gains are coming for an engine that was engineered for increased fuel efficiency, the power is just a by product of the increased efficiency... .... and the new 6 speeds are solely there for increased fuel efficiency, and the manual is again, probably regeared for better fuel efficiency just my speculations but I think they are pretty logical given the small amount of info we've been given. .. Also, so far Toyota is skimping bigtime on the accessories for the 3rd gen, only steps, roof rack, fog lights, bed extender, ball hitch, Mudflaps, running boards, Exhaust and a bed step... unimpressive... I hope TRD is going to at least make a catback exhaust for it... would love to also see a factory lift available to the general public without the need to buy a TRDpro or baja or what have you. To add, its to my understanding that Toyota has fixed all of the stupid quirks/vibes that the 2nd gens have with the 3rd gen. But you know that its an inevitably that the 3rd gen will develop its own strange issues too lol

Exactly why I hate the new look. It appears to have been designed and approved by some trendy assholes who were following a (rather regrettable, in my opinion) fad: huge hexagonal grills. None of the lines work together. The features don't flow into one another. Each individual feature looks as though it belongs on a different vehicle. There are too many creases on the face of that truck. I'll get used to it in time, but I'll always think my 2005 looks better.

Icon coil overs, Camburg UCA, 1" body lift, lots of trimming, Scion XB seats with Wet Okle covers, Alpine Head unit and amps with RF subs and Polk Momo in doors, and much more.
I personally think it is an ok design. Toyota, like many manufacturers insists on the big grill look. Dodge started that trend back in 97 or something with the Ram but I think it's so played out and stupid how much bigger grills have gotten.

I think the best looking truck being made right now is Ford's outgoing Raptor because the hood does not bulge upwards in the front end. Instead (the outgoing) Raptor hoods are horizontally flat and have that curve around the front end and with the factory blacked out projector headlights it looks like it's wearing a cool pair of shades.

(shit storm) Chevy's new Colorado is also better looking because of the same thing. No bulge upwards on the hood's leading edge and the headlights look like a nice pair of shades.

These bigass upward bulging grills make these new (not only Toyota) trucks look like previously mentioned catfishes or the pig from Angry Birds. This is why I like my 98 because 2000 was the last Tacoma without the upwards bulge on the hoods leading edge.

BF Goodrich Mud Terrains, LED bar, HID Hi's and Lows. I am planning on trading mine in for a 2016 or newer depending on when i gather all the information I need on this site to build my truck. Seems like every month I learn something new. Future mods so far: Front: - 16" King extended coilovers with remote reservoir shocks - Total Chaos Heim Pivot UCA's & LCA's - 6" BDS lift, just the Spidles & Crossmembers - T100 front axles - ReadyLift tie rods - SS extended brake lines - Larger calipers - Pelfreybilt bumper - WARN® 9.5cti-s winch - Glassworks front fender 6" rise and 4" bulge - Carbon Creations carbon fiber hood - Carbon fiber hood pins Rear: - 4" Alcan full leaf pack with Orbit Eye - King extended shocks with remote reservoir - Pelfreybilt rear shock relocator - ATO 6" shackle flip kit - ARB rear air locker - Rear differential breather mod - Pelfreybilt rear bumper - SS extended brake lines - Glassworks rear fenders with 4" rise and 4" bulge Misc: - 4.56 gears - One-piece driveshaft - RCI skids for transmission, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential - B.A.M.F. rock sliders - 17x10 rims with 4.5 backspacing - 35x12.5x17 Toyo Open Country MT - Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers - 50" LED light bar - Several Cree LED pods - Rear camera anytime mod - Underbody LED lights - Green HID's - Green LED Fogs - Aluminum camper shell - Line-X the whole truck
I was really hoping Toyota would have designed the fenders so that they would accommodate larger tires. Looks like fiberglass ones will still be needed, or LOTS of trimming.

I am not a fan of the front bumper or Tundra-like grilll either. It looks like it will be pretty hard for Pelfreybilt or another aftermarket company to design a high clearance front bumper for this design. If they find a way to build a nice high one with a skid plate, then I'll definitely trade my truck for the 3rd generation.

The irony is that vehicles now need less cooling than ever because they are more efficient.

That's why half the grill area on most modern cars is fake. They don't need the air, and allowing it under the hood screws up the drag coefficient, lowering mpgs.

That said, I am pretty sure safety drove a lot of the bloat at the front end. The crash testing on the Gen 2 was not exceptional; they are likely trying to improve their ratings and deal with the new small offset test.

That looks a heck of a lot less bad.

I do agree with others though - the lines don't flow as you look down the truck. It's clear that the cab had different designers than the front and back.

The grille looks much better there. I love everything about the truck except the fact that the headlights don't match the top or bottom of the grille. I believe they could be made to look better.

I never realised how much the exhaust hangs down on 2nd gens. Looking at this one, they had a lot better ways to route it to get it out of the way. I guess the first thing you'd have to get is some skids for it.

There's also more undercarriage pics taken by another guy found here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/3r...-you-go-ladies-denver-auto-show-pictures.html
