I put new brakes and rotors on in September.I noticed I had a squeak coming from my front driver side about a month and a half ago that was constant as you were driving and would go away immediately when you pressed the brakes. A mechanic told me it was a bad rotor so I got it replace and the squeak was gone for about a week then came back. The same mechanic said it was the brake pads then (I had the duralast ceramics on it) so I went back to factory pads. I did the pad change myself Thursday evening. I had the new rotor and the older one both resurfaced. I put the shims along with grease on the back of the pads. Now it doesn't squeak when I'm driving but it does if I lightly mash the brakes not enough to start slowing the truck down but enough to make the brake lights come on. Any suggestions on what the problem is? It's driving me crazy.

The only thing I can think of is maybe a bad caliper?

My question is why are you doing this ( press the brake, but not enough to slow down ). It makes no sense. I think the problem is you are being too anal about it.

Do the brakes stop the vehicle effectively? If yes, Don't worry about it.

Well ok so I didn't word that the way it should've been. Obviously any amount of pressure to the brake pedal is gonna slow you down over time. Say for instance you're riding behind someone and you keep tapping your brakes. It squeaks like crazy unless you apply moderate pressure.

You're not supposed to use grease....

You're supposed to use "Anti Squeal' compound. It can also be called "Disc Brake Quiet" You can buy it at your local auto store. I personally like the stuff in the spray can. It's a THICK & STICKY type paint usually red in color.

Is there any way I could've got the pads in wrong? I know I put the pad part towards the rotor, I didn't put the back of the pad against the rotor but is there any specific way they're supposed to go other than that?
