Possible faulty ECU? I remember reading somewhere that this is common on higher mileage tacomas.

The More I think of this - the more it could be. Did you put in some Dry gas and fill the tank with some new fuel??

I agree with checking the maf and throttle body. I had the same thing with a 97 Tacoma when it was new, would just randomly stall approaching red lights. Turned out to be a bad maf.

If it is a manual does it die if you are in neutral coasting into a parking spot? If so that's a vaccuum leak

Long shot - IF the Air Cleaner and/or intake path is dirty, blocked or leaking (i.e. Clogged air Filter, Leaves or other in intake, animal bites in intake hose, etc.) it could cause issues at idle. But I think that codes would be generated if so.... But I'd check anyway.

That kinda makes sense, but would it not throw a code and turn on the CEL ??

Buddy of mine had a Maxima that did this same thing, turned out the battery just didn't have a solid connection. Make sure it's hooked up securely. Also didn't shudder or anything....

As far I know, no. See the TPS works the flap on the throttle body. So when there is a sudden change up, or down with the linkage to the pedal the little servo is closing to fast and thus, choking the engine out. The TPS does use the computer during engine process but wouldn't activate a "code" when its failing or has failed.

There is no linkage to the pedal on 2nd gen Tacomas, the TPS does not control the throttle plate - the servo motor in the throttle body controls the plate while the TPS provides feedback to the ECM, and a code will be logged if the actual throttle plate position does not match the ECM's requested throttle position. A P2119 most likely, though there are others, many that relate to a failed TPS alone.

OP, I'd be cleaning that throttle body if you haven't done it yet, and see what happens from there.

I had an old car (63 chevy) that had some electrical problems - turned out the Battery was loose in the holder and when you hit the brake the battery moved and strained and moved the battery connections on the posts. Just another thought ....

my 1998 tacoma was doing this frequently. i changed my spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, and cleaned my MAF.
    nothing helped.

then i changed my coil packs and it ran like a top, cheap easy fix

So then cleaning the MAF seems to have helped.
