I only drink diet coke which would be exempt. I also believe the proposed bill has very little chance of passing from what I have read.

I couldnt agree with you more about the healthy incentives, the way I see it our system now where your MD gets $30 every time you come to his office doesnt work. It is like we want to keep people fat & unhealthy so we can collect office visit payments, in the UK your MD gets paid as to how well he improves his pts health IE: lower cholesterol/BP/weight, I don't know if the single payer system is right or wrong but as a healthcare worker I can honestly say the current system sucks, hard working people cant afford meds/care while lazy freeloading slackers use the ER like their personal Drs office. If we covered everybody with the bare minimum maybe insurance companies wouldn't have to stick it to the rest of us.

No, but the money should go toward curing obesity.

In my opinion obesity is not a disease, and the government throwing money at the problem isn't going to solve anything.
The person who is obese can solve the problem, not the government.

And as far as the government wanting to stop obesity by increasing the cost on soda, oh yeah...when I see it I'll believe it! But what I can see is another way for our government to take more of our money from under our noses, and waste it on something else. Maybe it will go for 20 grand for a desk, or 50 grand for a chair for those in congress?

LMAO- I hope that I just missed your sarcasm...cause you are talking about not wanting a tax on soda and juice- but you want to move to a country where 50% income tax is somewhat common??

And oh yeah...There is a 12-25% Value Added Tax....(on pretty much everything...)

But take a look at what you get for your tax money out there. Damn near everything is taken care of. IMO, that's money well spent.

Only thing I don't like about Sweden is their ridiculously strict automotive rules.

Fact of the matter is this:

Having a lifestyle that circles around eating healthy and exercising begins at a young age. Children need parental and educational structure to learn this. Anyone here can agree that fat little kids are likely to become obese at one point.

Parents are either part or all to blame for this, with their schooling picking up the rest of the blame.

Take the soda machines out of the schools - EDIT I guess Clinton got a bill passed to do this nationwide from 06-10. It allows sport drinks and diet sodas (some of the worst) though
    Take out the snack machines
Stop selling french fries/chicken fingers/pizza/ridiculously unhealthy foods in the cafeterias

PT/PE should be mandatory to graduate and involve the same level of testing any other class does. They should force kids to exercise their bodies not unlike their other muscle, the BRAIN. Does anyone remember the PRESIDENTIAL fitness test in school? You used to get a 'signed' certificate from the president if you passed the test. Why are we not enforcing and enhancing rewards like this?

Kids do not need another additional tax they will eventually burden. It breaks my heart to see children who are unhealthy, self conscious, and naive to the addictions they have simply because their surroundings have supported and enforced these addictions. I swear I see less and less kids playing outside every year and I wonder why...they're playing CoD on their PS3s instead of being children!

I would agree that there needs to be a higher emphasis on PE in schools. That seems to be something they are slowly phasing out. If the presidential fitness test was around I'm sure more kids would try for it. Would it attract all of them, no, but it's a cheap motivational tool.

LOL...Your argument for moving to Sweden is the entire argument AGAINST public option health care/other social services here.

I'm sorry...but if I made over there what I make here- I don't use NEARLY that much in social services...so I'd rather be able to decide what to do with my money...insted of the excess of my money going to someone else....
:D (Completly non-political smiles in effect..)

The answer is not to levy another tax on the people. Geesus, how many taxes do we need? Another knee jerk reaction from the goverment and another way to tap our wallets.

When I was a tiny tike I remember going to the store with my mom and there was 1 frozen food aisle in the store.

Now there are 3 or even 4 in the stores. WTF!! Is it too much to cook a meal for the kids and SIT down and talk to them over dinner. If they start out young eating right they will continue to do so later on.

It's a lifestyle issue. It has nothing to do with sodas. It's too easy to "push a button" and presto, dinner.
