That's a good point . The flip side is the number of Bloc MP's versus the one Green Party MP .

I'm OK with both being involved .

The only trades that do okay are electricians in the IBEW. There is a reason why all of our trades people move west for work.
Sheet metal, telecommunications, instrumentation, scaffolders and other trades like that aren't even recognized in NS so they get paid as labourers.

Its the same out west. Unless you are in a Union or in a trade that has a Red Seal certification you're going to get paid like a labourer.

No doubt red seal makes more, as they should. But the labourers in western provinces make significantly more than the labourers here. The labourer trades here all move west for work along with red seals. So much that every election the politicians BS about keeping workers here. In NB they seem to have given up on keeping people home and are now debating if they can add extra income tax to trades people working out of province. If you cant find work for them, why not just screw them out of some cash, right?

Sounds like a solid plan to get people to move west for good.

I can't really speak for much besides the Greater Vancouver Area. However, even though you're trades make less out east, they'd probably still end up with more money in their pockets at the end of the day than if they were working/living out here because of the higher cost of living.

I have friends who are electricians and a friend who is a plumber. They both work for larger businesses. Both of them are doing very well financially. The one openly admitted he made enough at his first apprenticeship, when oil was up, to basically start his career with a down payment on a house and a new Jeep for his wife in the driveway.

I'm sure there are guys who aren't making as good a living in trades as they are, but the guys I know as doing just fine considering what job prospects are out there for other people I know.

Have to disagree there, higher cost of living is more than just housing costs. Yes, a house is much more expensive there but out east we pay the most tax behind Quebec (income+sales), make the least income, pay the most for fuels (gasoline, diesel, home heating fuel), more expensive electricity, more expensive consumer products and more expensive groceries. Most of those are more expensive because of the extra tax imposed on the businesses supplying us.

The only direct comparison I have is my family living in Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray. All but one of those families are in fields of work unrelated to oil & gas. Though all of their homes cost more than here, they are all financially better off. They all have more disposable income and more savings.

Exactly, trades out west are careers whereas most trades people working in eastern Canada are just jobs.

I'm an Journeyman Red Seal Electrician myself. Everyone always thinks we make the top dollar on construction sites but it's actually usually the plumbers who make the most. Tons of guys go to Alberta and Northern BC to work. Wages are usually around 1.5 times what they are in town, not to mention living out allowances and overtime hours. You can easily make just as much if not more starting out as an apprentice as you would working as a Journeyman in town.

Yup, Alberta pays trades well. Maybe it's something to do with how we like to build up our industry's but don't tell OZ-T that jks.

Wildrose is in the lead in the most recent poles done in Alberta. This place is going to go to absolute shit if they get in.

I wouldn't be too concerned about WR. They, like all other political groups, will bend for $$$. If they shut down the industry that makes Alberta (and Canada) viable they won't be in power long.

To be honest most of the people who vote wildrose do so either because they are bible thumpers or they want the PC's gone but would never vote orange or red. That's the scary part. The wildrose is basically made up of the whackjobs who were to pigheaded, bigoted, or sexist to fit in with the PC's.

They would decrease taxes but slash public spending. Privatize everything to there buddies and leave the province in a far worse spot than what we are going through now.

Hopefully history repeats itselt and people vote PC instead of Liberal just to keep the WR whackjobs out of power. That or anyone else other than the WR wins but I can't see thr NDP gaining many more seats this time around. Too many people hate them out here.

You guys definitely get screwed when it comes to taxes and electricity, but Vancouver actually has the highest cost of gasoline in Canada. Mostly because of the various taxes they throw on it to help pay for transit.

Housing costs does play bigger role then you think. Try living in an area where housing prices start at half a million. Most people my age (early 20's) have given up on trying to save for a house, because even if they did save enough for a down payment they'd never be able to afford the large mortgage payments that go with it. Even buying a 1-2 bedroom condo here would cost you upwards of 300k. This ultimately drives renting prices up and people get stuck in a rut where they can barely afford to pay their rent yet alone put away money for a place of their own.

Meanwhile people from overseas come over with wads of cash and scoop up everything on the market and continue to drive housing prices even higher.

No denying Vancouver is crazy expensive. Nothing can really compare because last I heard it is the most expensive city in Canada. I was more referring to BC (and Alberta, Saskatchewan) as an entire province vs NS
