okay, so here's the info on this:

It is only possible to drive on a small portion of the abandoned turnpike that is accessible only from the east bound direction. And that is also only if the gate is open.
If you check out my build thread I've got a picture of the truck parked in the center of the section.
This is not like the abandoned route 61 in Centralia where nobody cares if you ride on it.
The best way to explore this is by bike, it is 13 miles long and hiking is a bit much. The last time I went out I only went to the first tunnel because I did it on foot. You cannot use motorized vehicles on the abandon section the locals frown upon that and I'm pretty sure they all have shotguns.

I'd love to make a day trip out of it but it's three hours one way to get off at the Breezewood exit. Also if you wanted to bike the entire thing it's a 26 mile bike trip.

 

Jesus fuck that much pedaling. I was thinking a dual sport would be a great way to check it out minus the shotguns.

no i don't regret it, because I don't like bombing through shit. its just something i have to be aware of. no more drive through car washes either which can be annoying.

yea you can turn it around, but you can still get a wave wash across the windshield and splash into it. the only safe way to do it is a donaldson prefilter if you want to blast through shit.
the stock snorkel head is good for driving in the rain and stuff like that, as it is designed well to get water out of it/keep water out of it. but if you get a solid stream like a hose or a splash from a puddle, you can have problems.

Everytime i've been by it the gate has been closed. never stopped to try to find a way around it though.

 

I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find a way. There's some things I draw a line on and that's one of them. I don't mind driving on old rt 61 because there's no one living around it. On the old TP there are PLENTY of folks who are close to it & I know if they saw someone cruising around on it there would be consequences.
I'd bike it though - Bonnie & I did a 23 mile trip on the Perkeomen Trail back in the fall. It was great!

Rewatched Tango and Cash last night. I've been catching up on my 80's and early 90's action flicks lately. Maybe watch Cobra tonight?

 

Looks awesome. I clicked on the Laurel Hill tunnel link as well....it's a "secret" Gnassi racing facility. They use it as a real life wind tunnel. Pretty slick.
