so the rust stain wouldn't be there if it formed underneath? its pretty close to the age of the truck. stupid thing was a little cancer not very shortly after I bought it

previous cars had rust all along the front of the hood and the paint never let go like this which is where im baffled. I can see the rust spot. yeah I know I needed to fix it which I planned on doing shortly

I agree that it has to do with the rust. Rust expands (can get up to 10x it's orignal thickness) and causes things to fall apart. It probably expanded slightly, and since Toyota uses shitty thin paint, it was enough to make it delaminate from the metal.

No telling whether Toyota will do anything about it - to me it almost looks like that's bare metal and not primed :notsure:

Primer came off still attached to the paint. Primer isn't sealed, water and rust make it separate from the metal also. Adhesion to the paint kept it together while it had no adhesion to the surface.

that's pretty disappointing either way I guess. so the paint sticks to the primer but the primer loosens from the metal? the hell is the point in primer... I thought that was the whole concept

True dat. I was just expecting to maybe see a little primer around the edges. looks like a clean break though. I have a few rock chips and you can see some primer in them, but then again, paint is missing from the impact, not from rust. oh well.

Just sand the entire truck to bare metal, and you won't know a difference! :rasta:

The primer promotes the bond of the paint.. It sticks to paint better than metal, and sticks to metal better than paint. Looks like rust formed under it and expanded and caused it to delaminate and peel. Can't say how the rust got there, but that's what it looks like to me!

Paint can lift from primer also, just not in your case. Each component is a layer, and if one layer has contaminants (rust or otherwise) then problems will arise. Some show immediately when the spray gun makes a pass, others don't. Yours is clearly rust related and this particular spot was the result of a scratch, chip, or other damage at the surface.

The other spots you mention? Without pics. Who knows.

So the OP saw his paint bubble and then fall off.... Yeah the dealership won't help you much there OP. Your best bet would have been 2 years ago. As far as sympathy.... Why the heck didn't you fix it 2 years ago!!!!!!

The other spots probably are rock chips except the door sill one. but that another story. they are on the door and on the upper part next to the window.

"Paint Protection" is another term overpriced fancy wax. I't doubtful that they would cover this, but it won't hurt to ask. The worst they could say is sorry your on your own.

I don't remember so well, but I thought the Paint Protection package was a one time thing and not a paint warranty. Anybody know what it actually entails?

If you've watched it forming for that long, why didn't you have it addressed BEFORE you lost a chip? You'd have had better luck getting it covered then. Now the dealer's got plausible deniability that it was caused by a rock, rather than a defect.

Generally when the dealer sells the "paint Protection" package, it's just expensive wax or sometimes referred to as "paint sealant". It will aftertime wear off as any wax will and requires to be re-applied or maintained over time. No wax will last forever, nor is it a one time use kind of thing.

I meant I recall it was a one time charge and one time "treatment" that "protected the paint from yellowing and fade."

    But I don't remember.

truck was new. from what I remember its supposed to be one time application and its supposed to be to protect against rust on frame and body for 10 years. I was sold on frame part and Tacoma...

with that said I'll find out more details tomorrow after work. I have two options before I'm on my own with it so we'll see.

I also didn't deal with it sooner because it never moved itself up the priority list and it did last night. should've could've didn't. too late for hindsight

Yep, an up sale for suckers.
Let's get you some green squares.
Knowing the first option of going to the dealer, I am interested in what the 2nd option is.
Note, I would preface the conversation with purchasing the General Mgr, Service Mgr, Service Writer to include the entire shop a catered lunch. Then, if your dealer even considers this repair let alone actually doing the repair know that it will be legendary.
