I dont care how the rust got there, whether it be from a rock or pre paint job defect, probably rock. The fact is it shouldn't peel up like that, its poor adhesion. The paint should be grabbing the metal stronger than a thin film of itself. A simple scratch test would reveal that. We used to have a spec at our plant for cast parts in which you would razor blade a checkered pattern and place tape over to see if the paint actually adhered to the substrate. Not an actual spec test, but based on one.

srsly I looked at the pics and

    a) you should have told dealer immediately since you paid for protection

    b) that paint DID peel excessively. again I bring a yaris and 4runner into
the picture with hundreds of rusty dings and all they get are localized rust circle the size of the original ding... never a chunk of peeling like OP posted.

when the rust circle grows it grows only where the rust forms, never a large disconnect of paint from primer OP posted

    OP has failed paint
and I feel it should be a free 200 dollar fixer-up

Sweet. So here is my update: nobody thinks that the paint peeling is normal. Paint didn't adhere to the metal correctly. They rock chips are all covered under my waste of money protection plan. Is it wrong of me to say eat a dick?

    Nice. Congrats.

What's the plan on the dealer side? Full respray or just the affected areas we talked about in PMs?

If you feel like it, it would be good info to see what their process to repair is and what their cost is, and yours if any.

They will sand old paint away until they find paint that did adhere. How much that is is unknown. Could be a hair larger than that spot, could be half the truck. I shouldn't have any cost. The part that is kinda shitty is Toyota needs to approve it still. But service manager and body shop manager are on my side in this one atleast

    Oooooh, a cliffhanger.

Can't recall anybody in memory with a thread about their experience with the paint protection. Cool.

Just my 2 cents on the topic, but seems like it's a factory defect. Meaning that the bare metal wasn't prepped right and probably had grease or oil contaminate that wasn't cleaned, so the primer never bonded to the metal in the curing process. Apply a little pressure like pressure washer and pop goes the paint. It also didn't help that you have a rock chip of some sort that provided some rust to help weaken that area..

Another theory is the rust created a pocket and the high pressure of the waster got into the crevices and ripped the paint.... but a chip that bad...it had to have had bad prep work so the paint didn't grab to the metal....it shouldn't flake off like that...especially a big chunk unless it never adhered to the metal.

Yep, fix the issues before they become a internet flame war. Take care of your investment. Glad the OP has a good dealer.

I live in hot no salt country, no need to worry about it here. Still, I get dings, they get cleaned and a touch up right away.
