Well after reading some different threads on here I have seen where the automatic trans has had a service bulletin for that seal and it says to install a new double ring seal...but I cannot find a service bulletin that calls out the same problem for the manual transmission, does anyone know of a TSB for the manual trans? I also looked at the part number on my bill and it is the old seal and not the new one...but if there is not a TSB for this then they had no reason to put it on and I just blew $400

If it leaks, it needs to be replaced. I didn't look for the the TSB to fix my leaking output shaft. I'm not familiar with the manual configuration but either way get a second opinion. $400 seems awfully high

I would like to see if there is a TSB on the manual trans for that output seal because if it is I can call the dealership and tell them they need to redo the job and put the double lip seal in because all they did was put back the original single lip seal.

the dealer will only fix non safety related TSB's if they are still within reasonable mileage. For these trucks the power train warranty is only 5year/60k. At 147K you will most likely be responsible for the fix. Good luck on the outcome.

Yea but if there is a TSB out on it they shouldn't put the original problematic leaking seal back in there...they should put the corrected double seal in there.

Hi, I suspect my output busing may need replacing because of some vibrations I am experiencing. Can it be replaced while replacing the seal? If so, how is the best way to get it out?

    Thanks

so I decided to change my (130K) seal today and this is what saw!
The old seal was melted inside!!!! I have to pick them off bit by bit with a long nose pliers. FRACK!!! lesson learned on procrastination. I thought it was a walk in the park but nooo and to top it off the mid section slipped and dropped down and hit my balls... totally ruined my day  ....End of gripe

Guy I had this same issue and I took it to a dealer and they replaced seal and flashed my transmission.. I went for oil change to my local dealer and he noticed that I have drive shaft leak as everybody else on here.. This dealer suggested to go back to first Toyota delearship and let them to repair but my local dealer said that not the seal needs to be replace but the whole shaft assembly because yoke is the problem.. When I went back to the first dealer he refused agnoledge that there is a leak he wiped the oil off the housing and said "oh that's old oil stain" and told me to go home and put card box under neath the truck and watch if it would leak... The problem is it's not leaking in the park position it leaks when I drive.. I got under neath and here is the drop of oil hangs there but I don't want to deal with that jack @$$ dealer.. I called Toyota customer service and told the whole situation they told me they will call me back and see if they can sel me a shaft at the discount price because I spent $430 first time.. So far no one called me back it's been 3 days...

Here is my question.. Should I replace first oil seal or should I replace seal and the shaft the whole deal is $1200??? Thanks guys!

    God bless America

Great write-up. I wish I had seen this before I paid Toyota 400$ to replace the output shaft seal. I do have a drive shaft question.
The rear U-Joint is shot on my 06' prerunner so I pulled the drive shaft, well I got half way thru pulling the drive shaft and when I went to unbolt it from the rear differential, I could not break the bolts loose. I am not a small guy, and I put everything I had and they would not loosen. Apparently last year when the dealership re-installed the drive shaft, they torqued the hell out of the bolts. I got a buddy that's going to help this afternoon, but I know I need to replace the bolts. Question 1, would NAPA have suitable replacement bolts and nuts, question 2, does anybody know the torque spec for these bolts? One more item, how much play should be in the transmission output shaft, or should there be any? It moves up and down about 1/8".image.jpg

I'm not sure if a prerunner has a single piece drive shaft or not if it does he is mostly right. If you look at a 4X4 drive shaft you'll find the slip joint is behind the carrier bearing it does not move a lot in and out of the transmission the only movement is the flexing of the rubber mount. It also rides pretty flat no matter how much weight you put in the bed. If the yoke is scored the bushing is toast and it will leak new seal or not. The yokes are replicable there is no need to replace the drive shaft for the want of a yoke.

I unbolted the carrier bearing just fine, but I can't slide the drive shaft off the transfer case. Pull, tap, yank, pry. Nothing. Should it just slide right off?
    Mine is a 2005 4x4 4-door.

Took me about an hour. I'm a slow worker. about 1.5 on the difficulty scale. an extra set of jack stands was a nice thing to have to hep support the drive shaft during removal and install. little surprised at how light the drive shaft actually was.

Any chance of reuploading these pictures? I'm about to replace my u joints, center carrier bearing and all the seals involved and I saw that there is a part Transfer Case Output Shaft Seal, Shift Shaft Seal, and Extension Housing Seal. I believe what OP is talking about is Extension Housing Seal. I also want to do transfer case output shaft seal but Rockauto shows a front and rear and not sure which one I need: NATIONAL 710140 or this: NATIONAL 710114. I'm guessing I need the rear (wheres the front seal go?), but when I compare dimensions to the other rear seal listed, SKF 16448, its different. Is it for another type of transfer case?
