I thought this was going to be a pain from reading a few comments on it and looking at where it was. It's one of the easiest I've ever done. I just reach up there from under the truck and turn it off by hand, 2003 V6. Now the 1995 Chevy with the 350 was a tough one....This one is a piece of cake!

I have a 92 s 10 and gona change a few more parts and if i don't get it running like i want it I might sell it and get an older Toya 4 cyl. Is it that hard really to get to and change the filter on those?

On my 1998 those bolts were self-tapping. Also, I have a coupla dents in the skid plate, so one time when I took them off I had a helluva time getting the nine bolts back in because the holes were ever-so-slightly off I bought new bolts from the dealer. Now when I reinstall a plate, I only screw the bolts in two or three turns until they are all started. When I am satisfied none are started cross-threaded I screw them in all the way starting with the two middle bolts in the front skid.

No, the skid plates are already off because I have a diff drop kit and I don't know if they will even fit. I don't go through the fender well...I go underneath the truck, I can't remember exactly what way I went but it was easy as hell...

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
It can be a little hard to get a filter wrench on, but what I do is take a piece of sandpaper and use it so I can grip it tightly without slipping and just twist it off by hand. No matter what precautions you take, it makes a hell of a mess. I've never spilled hot oil all over my hand like most people here do when they change them though. It's a good idea to get that oil nice and hot so it gets a chance to drain it all out. If you change it cold, it's too thick inside there and old oil gets left over in the pan.

No, this is the v6 location. The 2.7 filter shouldn't be hard to get to at all, it's on the bottom of the engine to the left side and is right in reach. Those are super easy to change.
I was going off the truck you had listed on your profile with a 3.4 v6.

I remove the flap inside the wheel well and unscrew the filter just enough before it starts leaking then I put a plastic bag on my hand inside out and finish unscrewing the filter then let it drop in the bag with the excess oil and let the bag with the filter in it drop down onto the container where I drained the rest of the oil. Simple as that. I agree though not much room between the frame & engine block / filter

That's a good trick. I'm going to try that next oil change. :)

I always end up dropping the skid plate and going through the side when doing an oil change. I have big hands and forearms so there is very little room to move once I get in there.

Learned the hard way a few years ago to never go to jiffy lube for an oil change. They put the filter on so tight it was impossible to unscrew by hand, ended up hammering a screwdriver through the filter to get enough leverage to get it off. What a mess that was! :(

    improved toyota goodness.
just a tip but IMHO the 1''nut on the k&n brand oil filter (part# hp-1002 i think) and going through the wheel well with a ratchet and 4''extention for about a turn its a peice of cake vs. not haveing the nut on the filter and haveing to rely on oil slicked hands and your superhuman grip.

I changed the oil about a month ago and just loosened the apron seal to where I could squeeze my hand by it and it wasn't that bad. Didn't make the mess I thought it was going to make lol. Really not much of a mess at all
