My buddy got a stereo for his boat. How do you hook it up? The wiring. We hooked up the ground to negative and there's two ones that say hot. One yellow one that is constant hot and the red says memory or something. It's so annoying

 

The red goes straight to the battery. It's to run the internal amp that's probably built in. You need a amp wire kit to connect everything correctly.

 

So I can't just put the constant power to positive and the ground to negative hard wired?

 

Sorry too much beer last night and didn't realize what I put down lol. The red wire gose to 12v switch power aka switch leg for you sparky yellow goes to constant power. Kinda like how a light switch works. Crutchfield.com has a nice how to and youtube also.

 

So you should be able to tie the two together and send that to the positive terminal and it should work right? We tried that and nothing. I'll check out that how to. Thanks!

 

No both goes to two different place. Red goes to 12v power switch aka acc on key switch. Yellow goes to constant power source.

 

Oh ok I see. So that way when the key is turned on it gets power?

 

Now to find where that acc wire is to tap into haha

 

Yes sir just like how a basic light switch works.

 

Yellow goes to the battery for constant 12v at all times. Thats how it keeps its memory. Red goes to a switched 12v which is typically ignition or accessory. Thats what triggers the radio to turn on. Boats are different though. Typically you have a battery cutoff which defeats the purpose of the yellow wire for memory since all will be lost when the battery gets turned off. If you put both yellow and red straight to battery then itll eventually drain your battery since the radio will never shut off. Both yellow and red must go to a switched source for a boat. You wont retain memory but atleast you wont kill the battery. Switched power should be found after the battery switcher. Ground goes straight to battery negative

 

Ok it all makes sense now about wiring. But we tried putting the red and yellow both straight to positive and still nothing...
