Anyone who has a Leer topper have any issues with the tailgate cap not fitting under the topper?

Just got mine installed and had to take off the cap until the dealer hears back from Leer. It looks as if the topper is missing some cutout notches to accommodate for the tailgate cap.

Here are some pics showing the small gap with the tailgate cap off. No way the cap will fit under there, the topper needs to be notched about .200"

Every Tacoma owner I know with Leer caps (multiple models) still have the tailgate cap in place.

Thx. I figured as much considering the tailgate is really fugly without the cap on there. Guess my topper was made on a Friday.

If they put a thicker gasket between the cap and bed rails, would it raise it enough for the tailgate cap to fit? I'd grind it with a dremel or shim the cap up a little.

Did they remove the plastic bed caps before installing the Leer cap ?

Shouldn't we be able to see the ends of them in your pics ?

Upon looking closer at your pic...did you (or the topper place) take the plastic bed rail covers off? I don't see it in the pic. I'm assuming the topper is designed to fit on top of the plastic rail. Without the caps in place, the topper will sit lower and thus the interference.

Edit: OZ beat me. Of course.

I have a 100XL on my '14, it should fit with the tailgate cap installed, did they install the cap tape under the shell when they put it on? That alone gives you more clearance.

For those of you asking about the bedrails, 99% of the LEER caps sold are "skirted" which means that they overlap the bedrails with them remaining installed. There is a non-skirted version available too, I hate to see non-skirted caps put over the bedrails, it looks horrible IMO.

As far as the tailgate cap, it remains on. One thing that you will want to do IMMEDIATELY is to protect the paint on your tailgate below the tailgate cap. I marked how far down the door gasket comes down on the tailgate with masking tape, removed the tailgate cap, installed some thick 2" black rubber tape, then reinstalled the tailgate cap. If you don't do this, in a few weeks time the cap door gasket will wear through your tailgate paint. If you do this install correctly, you won't see the rubber tape when the cap door is closed and it will not be fuggly when you open the door, just a 3/4" black stripe. That door gasket not only presses against the paint, but grinds back and forth on the paint as the cap tweaks while driving.

I just went out and checked mine, there is 3/16" clearance above my tailgate protector. I have pics but currently don't have a way to post them. I also took a pic of my paint protector tape.

My bet is they took the plastic bed rail caps off and the Cap sits too low...

We're waiting for tbe OP to reply but it does appear that someone removed the plasic bedrails, thus making it sit lower. The cap looks like the "skirted" version but someone thought it would look better if the rails were removed....and now the tailgate cap issue.

Is anyone with a Snug top or ARE having this issue with the door rubbing the paint? Where do you get the black rubber tape ?

I took my OEM plastic tailgate cap off after 4 years to install a KB Voodoo cap and there was absolutely no damage to the paint

    See pic #3

Nope, bed caps are there. Just unable to see them. Here's some pics showing the caps from the inside. At this point, I think our only option is going to be notching the topper to allow more room for the tailgate cap.

One I thing I didn't really care for is that the very bottom edge of the topper is unfinished. No paint or anything. I would think this would be an area that could be susceptible to water infiltration. Is everyone elses LEER topper unpainted on the very bottom edge? I'm thinking of adding a clear cote or something to that edge.

It would be great if someone could post a pic similar to the first two that I took so I can see if your topper has a notch in that area to allow space for the tailgate cap.

Leer 100xq. Mine is extremely close, so much so that the rubber flap got torn away quickly. I'd say, put the tailgate cap back on and trim the fiberglass with a razor knife until it clears. Also, I don't know about others with your model cap, but the edge on my 100xq is painted.

Thanks for the pic windsor. Theres about .200" that needs to be removed, so it's gonna take a dremel or grinding wheel.

All three of the Leers I've had (current included) haven't been painted on the lower edge. Water has never caused any problems on mine. I wouldn't worry about it.

    going to be fun!
I think someone should find away to maybe put some type of spacer instead of removing glass from the topper.
