    More good info, thanks. I bought a couple toyota filters the other day and a filter wrench/socket. I did first oil change w a purolater filter, as it was an, on sale offer when i was buying the mobil 1 and used a band filter wrench, alot of tiny turns to finally loosen filter. So its good to be ready for next oil change, which unfortunately will be in cold weather, soon.

    Good thread. Engineer or not, it's fun to take shit apart and see what's inside. Flow rates and filtering ability aside, it's easy to see quality construction....and gimmicks (same filter inside with a different paint scheme for more money.)

    I read through the first 12 pages or so then skipped to the end. About 20 pages back there was an important photo in the Toyota dealership showing counterfeit filters. This has become an enormous issue across all industries, and I would caution those of you who say you buy your filters on eBay. In an age where we now can trace bridge and building collapses to counterfeit hardware being used, it's a serious issue. Wait for the sales and buy them from the dealer (at my dealer they do 20% off every Wednesday after 4pm...not bullshitting.) I'd rather have a real Fram filter than a fake Toyota filter. Just saying.

    I read an article like this (I think on Bob's) a long time ago and switched to Wix or the stock Toyota filters, but thanks for the great photos Chris.

    I have a 2014 Tacoma with the V6. Had it's first oil change at about 5000 miles. Have about 6000 on it now and a message appeared on the screen that said "Oil Filter". So I took it in to ask about it and the tech who was about 11 years old knew nothing of course. He reset the computer but the message stayed on there. Then then genius poked the "don't show this message again. I could have done that myself. Sheeese! Anybody had that message before?

    Special thanks to thunderone for sending the 2 newest filters to check out. A NAPA Gold 1516 ($5.99), and a Mobil 1 M1-209 ($11.99). Both of these are a +1 size up from the OEM replacements, so lets see how they stack up!

    The Anti drain back valve, although claimed to be "Patented", is very similar tot he NAPA:

    Upon disassembly, the filter canister had all sorts of flaws, including this dent. The outside was perfect, but there were all sorts of bends, and dings in the filter canister. Not a big deal, as this doesn't affect how it works, but for the money, you would expect a little better quality control:

    Mobil 1 claims the filter media is "Synthetic Fiber Blend", however, its the same media as in the NAPA Gold filter, but only 171.5 sq. in. of filter media.

    personal note:
    The adhesive that Mobil 1 uses to hold the media, and center tube together, makes epoxy resin look suitable for use by pre school children. Never in the past, have I had to fight a filter this hard to get it apart. I have a strange desire to Email Mobil 1 and tell them either:
    A. Well Done!
    B. HA! I BEAT YOU!
    C. Go fuck yourselves!

    Regardless, this filter shouldn't come apart unless your truck explodes, and even then, I would bet on the filter.

    The NAPA Filter is around 5.99, and the Mobil 1 is around 11.99. As for the OEM Filters, check Amazon, one of the vendors on here, or Ebay.

    Thanks for the cut apart Chris. Interesting stuff.

    As a interesting side note, but not really to relevant to our stuff,,

    We are pounding the Napa Golds with Brad Penn 50wt race oil at 70psi and they hold up like new as we have cut a few apart during the season for a flake/speck check. No burst shield needed, but we do use a oil containment diaper setup (required). Standard BBC Gold filter without bypass.

    Filters get ran two outings with 6 or so passes per day,,oil gets changed every race day. 10 quarts.

    Well that settles it for me. OEM from now on! It's sad that even the oversize filters don't have the same amount of filter media as the smaller OEM unit.
