OK, the 3.5 should be a good engine

The difference this time around is that the 4-Runner was released with the 1GR engine months ahead of the Tacoma release, this time the new engine debuts in the Tacoma.

    Marketing 101.
Also if they release the info too soon it will make it harder for the dealers to sell the 2015 Tacoma models.

And Joe-Blow consumer may not have a clue a new model is just around the corner when they purchase a 2015 Tacoma. Some of us though are more in tune with new model introductions and have been waiting for a redesign to upgrade our current Tacoma's.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    Right that is it..
Here is a quote from Toyota fleet..
Which means by May 1 Toyota has to have numbers for 2016 or they start losing money.

This is why you need specs way ahead you start taking orders for new truck. No fleet will make orders for something they don't know.
Thats why in 2004 Toyota had numbers way ahead fleet orders. This is why whatever problem is Toyota having with new engine is something really crazy since they dont have numbers yet.

Ok if they don't release the numbers by May 1 Toyota will start losing money on Tacomas.
    Gotcha!

Hello all, I'm 7GR, long time lurker, first time poster.

I can't help but to register to make a post here, due to enormous amount of misinformation and unjustified negative criticisms on the new Tacoma's 3.5L engine.

Some quick investigations will show hints of what this new engine is about. It's called the 7GR (probably 7GR-FSE since the "S" stands for direct injection). It runs on regular Otto-cycle and a modified "fake" Atkinson-cycle at light loads, with the help of VVT-iW. It does NOT run on pure Atkinson-cycle like that of a Prius engine, which has electric motor to compensate for the lack of torque due to Atkinson-cycle.

If you look a little harder you will find some good info:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine

    https://www.toyotaasg.com/data/publications/900/MY 2016 Model Reference 04-01-15 Field Copy.pdf

As for how much power and torque it'll make, no one is sure at this point. But just take a look at the upcoming Lexus RX350, which will use the same 7GR engine, and the horsepower for that Lexus was simply stated at around 300hp.

I hope people will stop speculating with misinformation until official numbers do come out.

And for the few who are on here hating on the 3rd gen, why the hell are you here? Something tells me you have nothing better to do in life than to piss in other people's cereals, and that's pretty pathetic if you ask me. Enjoy the truck you have right now, and please let others enjoy theirs when they do go buy the 3rd gen with THEIR OWN MONEY with no fucks to give about your bitter judgement.

Hi 7GR, well played :) Thank you for providing some evidence with some potentially juicy info.

Was it you that edited the Wikipedia page? :)

That's not what I meant, I'm all for a good discussion, but with proper information.

I like your sig, although my schwartz is slightly bigger, because dual VVT-i ;)

No, never edited any wiki pages in my life.

However, I'm just as interested in the 3rd gen Tacoma as many here, whether we're buying or not.

But we can all stop thinking the engine is the same one used in the Camry :)

Close enough.. the 4.0L was only used in vehicles with frames. Whatever iteration the 3rd gen Tacoma has of the 3.5L comes from cars, vans, and crossovers. I'd take the 4.0L for less money with a 2 mpg hit.

LOL i know how you feel. But remember, for every person that reads this, 10 will skip past it and get on the "2GR IS SHIT" bandwagon....

You have no idea about what this 3.5 would be like. What if it pisses rainbow and shits sparkles, has more power, torque, and MPG than the 4.0. Would you still take the 4.0

Fair point, and there's something to be said about having ample torque right from idling speed. It's very nice to have more or less 200 lb-ft readily available at 1000 rpm.

Due to the 7GR's D4S system, I believe the smaller displacement is compensated by utilizing direct injection at the lower rev range to increase torque output, until mid to high rev ranges where it transitions to port injection to make top-end power. The side benefit of D4S is lesser chance of carbon buildup on the intake valves and runners, as opposed to a pure direct injection setup.

The 2GR is far from shit, especially the one in the IS350. Man that thing goes like a horse on steroid, and still relatively quiet as fuck, compared to our truck engines that are pretty loud due to the ticking noises which is actually normal.

I'm used to the ticking noise now, it helps me sleep at night :D

I really only notice the 2gr ticking from outside the vehicle. Inside the GS i don't hear it. It really is an odd sound. Darn toyota injectors. It moves pretty well tho, and sounds great above 3500rpm :D

Yes, yes I would. Let's be reasonable here. Toyota has never been known to have the best mpg trucks/ suvs. The 3rd gen will be lucky to be at or near the 2015 Colorado MPG ratings / real world MPGs.

It very well may have better mpg, torque, and power than the 4.0L but that doesn't mean it's "better". I'd rather have the 4.0L and to be honest an updated version of the dual vvti 4.0L would have been better in this truck.

But per a recent Maritz study polling new vehicle customers, 67% of people don't even tow anything. Toyota has done their homework and knows the 3.5L van motor will be suitable for grocery running and hauling a bicycle in the bed. No need for a truck motor anymore.
