I think the goal of the downsizing is to marginally increase horsepower and torque across the rev range, but improve on fuel economy, especially with the modified Atkinson-cycle when on light throttle applications. This is done in place of cylinder-deactivation systems other manufacturers use.

The idea is the intake valves remain opened for a little longer after BDC of the intake stroke, so some fuel-air mixture goes back into the intake runners during compression stroke. BUT for the power stroke you still get the full stroke of the power by using less fuel-air mixture, effectively decreasing torque output but also fuel consumption. This only applies during light load or throttle applications, and will instantly resume back to normal Otto-cycle when power and torque are called for depending on load and throttle position.

The Lexus RCF 5L V8 2UR-GSE also has such a system. This tech isn't new from Toyota, as some had suggested and inferred the lack of reliability of such a system.

Its going to have like 1,000,000 HP at 4,000,000,000,000 RPMs
    and still do 100 MPG.
To hell with laws of physics. A lot of people on this forum dont like science... :p

At least you get to whine. TRD still has not release a S/C for the dual VVT-i. :frusty:

    Nice shirt btw :D

Forgot to ask, are you aware of a reference that shows the new 7GR will definitely have VVT-iW w/ the switching Otto/Atkinson cycle? It sounds correct to me, but I haven't found a specific reference that explicitly says as much...either for Tacoma or RX350.

No reference, but from a few posts I read in a Lexus forum somewhere where they were discussing the 3.5L engine in the upcoming RX350.

It's very simple inductive reasoning, in that to achieve the fake Atkinson-cycle, the only way to do that is with the VVT-iW system (W stands for "wide", meaning it covers a very wide angular range of cam-phasing). The regular VVT-i system doesn't cover such wide range of cam-angles. The only unknown now is whether it is just VVT-iW or VVT-iE (E probably stands for "electric" which uses an electric motor instead of oil-pressure to modulate the cam-phasing).

I believe newer Toyota vehicles will all have engines adopting at least either of these cam-phasing systems.

Frankly I can't wait until they do away with the camshaft altogether, like the electromagnetic solenoid actuated valves that Koenigsegg is working on and trying to perfect.

Looks like the Prado (a version sold in China) would have the same 7GR engine.

First, the translations in there are hilarious. Landlord = OP? Ha.

Anyhow, the pic of the Chinese Prado 7GR here:

indeed has similarities to the engine in the release announcement taco:

The Prado engine photo didn't show, probably due to hot-linking.

Now if anyone can find actual specs or performance figures for the engine in either the upcoming RX 350 or the Prado, then we'd have a really good reference to what the 7GR might be making for the 3rd gen Tacoma.

I've tried, but information is really scarce. That means Toyota is really good at keeping power figures on tight lips until that info is ready for prime-time.

Nice Find! I think it's safe to assume that the new 7GR in the Lexus will be tuned on 93 octane...hence the 300 hp claim. Ours will most defiantly be tuned with 87 octane _ 280-290 hp

I found this on a Russian website on the 2016 Prado.

    3.5 petrol (7GR-FSE, D-4S,) about 300 hp, consumption is reduced by 17%, euro-5, euro-6 confirmity,*

You brought up a good point, Jimmy. At this point I'm hoping for 300hp on 87 octane, and maybe at least 20 more horsepower with 91 octane. But your speculation might be the more conservative yet accurate one.

Nice find Kooltaco. I like that we're slowly piecing this puzzle together. Hopefully we'll hear official figures by next month or so, but finding clues here and there on the internet is rather fun.

Hmm, now we just need the current Prado V6 mileage.... Add 17%, and correct for potential weight difference between the Tacoma and Prado....and, maybe we have a ballpark mpg guesstimate? (I know, doesn't take into account gearing, tire differences, different drive train loss, aero, etc, etc)
