    So getting back to our discussion of the Defined Shackles , I sent him an email asking this ;

    "With your Tacoma greaseable shackles , where does the grease fitting allow lubrication to occur ? Between the shackle and bushing , bushing and sleeve , sleeve and through bolt or which combination of the above ?

    Thanks in advance ,

    Peter"

    and the response ;

    "Peter,

    I use common crush sleeve style bushing assembly. so the grease path goes to the center sleeve, where it supplies the grease grooves cut in the I.D. of the bushings to properly lubricate the joint. with this joint, as long as you tighten the through bolt properly, the only thing you need to put on the bolt is antiseize so it dosent rust in place."

    Got it, it's just like most aftermarket uca's then.
    Like I mentioned before though, make sure to crack than bolt/nut loose to allow the grease to actually move around and keep those bushings happy.

    Are you sure it's not just a titanium nitride coating over steel? It would give basically the same color as a bronze sleeve. A magnet will tell you for sure.

    If it is bronze, get rid of those asap. Bronze is just copper and tin (traditionally 80/20%) and with modern alloys some additional shit. The only advantage bronze gives you is the thru bolts won't seize. I won't say bronze is a soft metal, but it's not hard. It's an in between metal. Its 80% copper which is inherently a soft metal. Statues for example are often made of bronze because it is easy to work with. By no means a super strong metal.

    I personally only use 4130 chromoly sleeves now, but you know me. I have a website at home saved that sells short lengths of basically whatever wall thickness you want for fairly inexpensive. I'm traveling for work, but if you need it PM me and I'll get it to you when I get home. Anti-seize on the thru bolt during assembly and you're set.

    I'm not saying don't take their word for it. Toytech is good people. But a magnet will tell you real quick.

    I took my new Dakars apart. I cleaned them really well. The OME factory put wet grease between the leafs. I cleaned all that up, wiped them down with acetone. Then I cleaned off the flaky paint, and sprayed them with new paint. I'm going to use some moly dry lube and rebuild the leaf pack. I got that pond liner patch kit stuff, gonna use a little bit. My install should be in six days. :D

    Is there any word of advice about the actual taking apart of the leaf pack?

    I did what OZ said. I used a 6" C-clamp. Pretty easy stuff.

    Yes! lol prefurbishing.

    Your previous post with pics on the subject was very informative. I slightly resent the labor to prefurbish them, but whatever, I plan on keeping the truck a long time so I guess it's worth it.

    FWIW, mine looked exactly like yours. Flaky paint and all. Did you call ARB USA to get the replacement plastic / rubber spring clips? Mine were almost all destroyed in shipping.

    Thx.

    I was fucking pissed. I was getting ready for a long road trip, and this added fucking days to an already busy prep and truck service schedule, and my right elbow was injured at the time.

    Anyway, glad you found the info helpful.

    Yes, call ARB customer support, they will mail you a fresh set free.

    Both these are "new" LOL. They don't survive shipping.

    Weather tech floormats and visors, ImMrYo rear-view mirror bracket Cooper ST Maxx 255/85/16 On stock TRD alloys. OME 887's w/NitroCharger sports, LR uca's, Toytech sway bar relocate, Dakar leaf's modified with some 1/8" UHMW liner strips. SuperBumps front and back.
    I feel your pain. I did extensive/overkill "pre-furbishing" but it's been a silent for me since. Short of stripping off all the graphite paint they will rust. Fluid film or similar helps.
    The pond liner mod is great, but I think using a leaf liner would last longer for those who do not plan on adding the ome extra leaf for more capacity. It is also more expensive and falls into the prefurbish category.
