Ok guys, I'm in the market for a Tacoma.

Drove 3 today. When I went to 4LO with them, all of them beeped at first, then one of them stopped beeping.

Is this beeping in 4LO constant, just to keep someone from hopping on the highway in 4LO or whats the deal?

I don't think you can go straight from 2H to 4L. You have to go into 4H, make sure the 4WD is engaged, with the solid light, then go into 4L from Neutral or Park.

It's beeping because the 4WD is not engaged. Oh, and you shouldn't be driving on the highway in 4L anyway, it's meant for lower speed operation only.

I would think you would be bumping the rev limiter before you got to 50 mph. Don't know for sure, too scared to try.

flip to 4 high, you can do this at under 60mph on the fly preferably in a straight line (best to probably do it rolling less than 5mph)

Once the 4wd light is on solid,

stop, put the truck in neutral, and flip it to 4lo, sometimes rolling ~ 2mph in neutral will get it to go in easy.

If your a manual, PUSH THAT CLUTCH ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR when flipping to 4lo.

Mine beeps the entire time I have it in 4Lo. It is supposed to remind you that you have it 4Lo is my understanding.

Not sure about OZ-T maybe they didn't beep in 4Lo constantly at one point but now they do. Might be something they changed at some point so older(date) models may not beep constantly.

@locaster you can go from 2WD to 4Lo even says so in the manual. Of course you do have to follow the process you described.

When switching from 2 to 4H or 4Lo you want to be sure that none of the wheels are spinning.

To add to confusion it also beeps if you switch to 4WD and it fails to engage in this case the dash icon dose not light up. So dash light on and beeping you have 4Lo engaged. Dash light off and beeping 4wd is not engaged after you have turned the selector in this case roll forward slowly less than 2 mph and it should then engage and keep beeping if in 4Lo but now the dash icon will light or if in 4H the beeping will stop and dash icon lights.

It's beeping constantly cause it isn't engaged. You can shift in to 4h at any speed under 60 mph. To go to 4L stop and put it in neutral then shift into 4L.

    Nope

    If it's beeping it's not in 4L

and all your wheels can be spinning to shift into 4HI , I do it all the time , in fact if your wheels aren't moving it won't engage 4HI

Actually you are right come to think of it. Beeping means not engaged for both 4H and 4Lo. Late night brain fart.

I don't know about the wheels spinning part though the one time thus far that I could not engage 4H the reason was that two wheels on the same side where slipping in mud. So I put it in neutral and rolled backwards out of the mud then fowards and it engaged.

When I say spinning I mean up in the air or in a slipping situation as I described yes otherwise if rolling freely on a surface yeah you kinda need that lol.

Weird. They acted like some portion of 4WD was engaged, as they clearly were not in 2WD. Sales guys didn't have a clue..

No usually they don't and mine even owns a 4x4 Taco and told me that and see it stuck in my brain even though I know its wrong. What it must have been was a failed activation of 4H. See they do all that sitting in a lot which of course will in fact not activate the front drive portion.

It might light the 4x4 icon (a green drive train thingy) even if not engaged comes on the beep says hey I'm not engaged dumb ass. I recall now the time in the lot and the one time it did not engage for me in the field both times it was a failed activation.

There is even a card on the driver side sun visor explains how to engage the different modes.

If you had it engaged in 4HI but put the selector to 4LO it would be in 4HI but beeping because it couldn't shift to 4LO

I know you came to your senses about this, but can you imagine having to put up with it beeping all the time in 4LO? That would drive me nuts. Most people can't even stand 5 seatbelt beeps...

In my case I was in 2WD and went to 4H and it beeped. I was in mud on both wheels on the right and it kept spinning and not engaging so I put in neutral and rolled back out of the mud for a few feet then drove forwards almost immediately it stopped beeping thus it must have been the wheels slipping in the mud that caused it not to engage.

Lol I thought that as soon as the guy "showed" me on the lot. Thought there must be a way to mod that. Read in the manual that night how it worked.

This. It beeps because you are in 4 hi and its not shifting into 4 lo when you turn the knob. In my truck the clutch has to be fully depressed in order to shift from 4 hi into 4 lo, otherwise it beeps to tell you that you are not engaging into 4 lo

Either way the noise is to notify you that you are not engaging 4wd or 4lo for whatever reason it may be
