Sh!ft's Supercharged SR5 4x4

Bought my '06 Taco in Mar'15 from Torrington Toyota. It was stock with 79,784 miles. Brand new frame and leaf springs (Safety Recall E12).



I signed the papers and handed over the keys to the old Ford Ranger. Torrington Toyota ordered the TRD supercharger. Enjoyed the new ride for a few days before the S/C was installed.



I normally do my own work, but the S/C had to be dealer installed to fiance it and for the truck to be eligible for the 36k mile warranty.

I've been set on and researching Tacomas for ~ a year. A module in the Ford Ranger was slowly shitting the bed, so it was time to make moves. I stopped at Torrington Toyota to check out a red '05 that was listed on web, but it was sold when I got there. Fortunately, they had another Gen2 6MT on the lot.

I had an overall good experience and would buy from Torrington Toyota again. The new frame was suppose to be a 3 week lead time, but the truck was ready in 4 days. I drove it off the lot with a new frame, new leaf springs, new tires, and a full tank of gas. I brought the truck back for the s/c install on E. They gave me a rental for 3 days free of charge, and returned the truck with a full tank of 93. The tech did a nice job on the s/c install.

I dealt with a sales rep named Tee. He was a cool guy, fairly honest, and good about keeping me in the loop during the frame and s/c installs. Only gripe I had was that he told me my truck was from California. The original frame wasn't in bad shape, but it had obvious evidence of salt corrosion. I pulled the AutoCheck report and found that it was from NY. No biggie, and it scored a 99 on AutoCheck!

Bought the truck on the 21st. The S/C was installed on the 25th. I normally do my own work, but the S/C had to be dealer installed to fiance it and for the truck to be eligible for the 36k mile extended warranty.

I put ~ a hundred miles on the truck before the S/C install. The N/A 1GRFE was already a nice bump coming from a 3.0L Ford Ranger. The S/C looks good, sounds good, and provides a decent power gain. It's still no race car, but it's a significant gain. Have to be a bit careful taking off from a dig with an empty bed on wet or sandy pavement even with the brand new BFGoodrich long trail T/A tours. I've also surprised a couple assholes that did not want to let me merge on I-84 .

I'd like to find out how much of that power gets eaten up by the Taco's drive train. Subara's eats ~25%hp and ~16%tq on EFI Logic's AWD mustang dyno.

 

I read somewhere that if a supercharger gives you 60HP, it's actually giving you 120 and costing you 60. The dyno'd results of 66 HP and around the same boost in TQ are after any losses regardless.

 

The brochure says + 65bhp 56bhp. The 4x4's drive train can't be that much more efficient than the Subaru's hungry symmetrical all-wheel drive system. I'm thinking my Taco might make 230rwhp on EFI Logic's mustang dyno with decent conditions. Dyno #'s don't mean much, and that's not my recent for buying the truck. I will post the results if I end up taking the truck to one of EFI's open dyno days.

 

How's the TRD shift knob. I've been thinking about getting one.

I like it. It's good quality, and has some weight to it. It's a larger diameter and sits slightly higher than the OEM shift knob.

 

The original owner thought it was a great idea to hack off the OEM front mud flaps.



Found these on Amazon. The Husky mud guards are higher quality, mount more securely, and cost less than OEM replacements.



To make life easier, Open up the 3 OEM bolt holes on the flap to 5/16", and loosly install the 2 bolts shown above first.

 

Another Amazon purchase. I had one of these on my Ranger for years and loved it. The cover fits nicely.





It hooks securely to the track with no modifications. I added a few 1/4" flat wash to the front hooks for easier install and removal.

 

I just ordered one. I've had a few other manual cars...mainly a 05 and 11 wrx. The 11 had a nice shift feel and the 6 speed in my taco has me chasing a similar shifting feel.

 

The truck was wrecked in May 2018 by some spoiled kid driving on the wrong side of the road.
