If your doing a good amount of highway driving then do not bother with 4.88's. You will be reving to high eating a ton of gas. If you are spending most of your time on secondary roads then 4.88's are fine. I went with 4.56's on mine. I have 500lbs of armor and running 265 km2's and the gears are fine for mixed driving

I have some nerf bars off my '96 that I would like to re-fab to go on my 2012, but was told it was unwise to weld them to frame. Any thoughts on this....

Yea I tried 4lo.I think I could climb a tree.In 5th on the highway Im at 3000rpm at 70mph.Thats a little busy. Hoping the 285s will calm it down just a bit.No more reving motor or ridding clutch on take off anymore. So I did achieve my goal.

I've always shifted at around 1,500 rpm while in town (0-30mph), yes I do shift a little quick in the 0-30 range but I'm used to it. The truck just feels way more "alive" now. Our top speed limit here is 55mph, I just did 60mph at just a hair over 2,000 rpm. I'll do a 75-80 mph run later tonight and I'll post up the rpm that took for that speed.

Just ordered 4.88 gears for my 2.7L

They said 4cyl clamshell fronts will require a 6cyl carrier...due to ring gear thickness.

Also, If anyone does work on their front diff, might checkout the needle bearing replacement from east coast gear supply:

I run 4.88 on mine with 275-70R17 tires and auto tranny. I am happy with the results.
IMO, if you are auto, go 4.88. Manual, 4.56, depending on tires of course.
Auto will have lower rpms at cruising speed than a manual.

Plug your numbers into the website below to get some good info.

I started a thread a while back that discussed this topic that has some good info.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/352145-4-88-1-4-10-1-why-not.html

And this thread is actually years old. facepalm

    I just installed 4:56's on my 1996 5 speed 2.7 and I have 265/75/16's, I think that's perfect

Not trying to thread jack.. But I'm getting thirds very soon, looking to go to 35s on my 4 banger was going to go with 4.88s but I'm considering 5.29s or would that just be too much?

So has anyone gps checked their truck with 488's at highway speeds? For example the 55-70 range? I'm thinking of going 488 with 255/85r16 but I don't want to wring the trucks neck every time I'm on the freeway
