I use to have an access cab 6 speed. I sold it and bought a dclb auto. For my uses I would never look back. The auto gets better mpgs and is just nicer to drive. I've always had manuals also, but the Tacoma manual is clunky. It's fun, but I like the auto better.

I would never own a short bed. I use my long bed all the time, and sometimes 6 foot is short.

I started a new threat on it, but I'll add a short version here... I drove a used 6spd today and the clutch was too stiff for me to enjoy it. If all tacos are like that, it looks like its DCLB (thus the auto) for me.

I don't know, but you'd have to downgrade to a 4 cylinder to get a 5 speed manual.

Yah, I know. But a local dealer has one and I thought that if the clutch feel is the same, I'd give it a try.

My 5 speed feels fine to me. I never think to myself "man I wish that pedal was easier to push." The girlfriend says its heavy but she is 4'11". I've never drove a 6 speed to compare to

Good news though...I found another 6-speed to drive that is newer than the one I tried today...so I'm going to try it again.

Another prospective buyer, I just found this thread. Question: anybody have photos of what 8 foot lumber looks like in a short bed with the extender/cage installed?

I have been leaning toward long bed + double cab, but I don't move materials every day, more like twice a month, and I prefer the look of the short bed. So I'm wondering if I can make it work.

I searched on the forum (and Google) but didn't find a clear example of how much the lumber would overhang. I mean, I know it's a 5 foot bed + roughly 2 feet of extra space with the extender, but I'd like to be able to SEE what the dimensions shake out to...

No pics, but it worked fine with 20 4x4 8' long boards without the bed extender. If you like the look of the short bed than run with it you won't regret it.

    That's 20 pressure treated 2x6's (10- 8' & 10- 6').

All I can say is that I have a DCSB in a manual and i wouldn't trade it for anything. I have always had manual cars. I don't understand why everyone refers to manuals as "just for sports cars"

Ok here is a point no one has mentioned yet. SAFTEY imo autos are safer than manuals since you have kids id go auto.

    Remember the children. Good luck

-Stalling out in front of a train/semi (jk I'm sure OP can drive)

-kids left in car can/could disengage parking brake and shift into neutral (When i was a kid and dad was in a store I was playing as if I was driving) while autos if the keys are out of the ignition the truck isn't moving

-Just less to worry about when trying to take care of kids and drive

Honestly either is a good choice and I love manuals just throwing some opinions out there

Jokes are all fine and good I'm just more curious as to if you really think autos are safer..

I think the "Just less to worry about when trying to take care of kids and drive" part is what I'm most interested in hearing about.

I mean I love manuals as much as the next guy but you can't argue the amount of work it takes going from stop light to stop light, I mean manual you need both hands and both feet vs auto you can use one leg for the gas the other to hold the steering wheel straight and have both hands to fix a bottle or what ever.

And there is always human error vs machine

But that being said if this was me id go for the manual because I like the short bed

I would hardly call shifting a manual transmission "work".

So to get this straight you think it is safer to steer with one leg and mess with a bottle with both your hands than shift a manual transmission?

Human error as in grabbing for a drink in the forward cup holders and accidentally shifting into neutral while driving on the highway or reaching for the bottle that dropped with your two free hands and accidentally shifting the auto trans shifter you are reaching over while not paying attention to the road ahead of you because you are focused on your child vice driving.

Although these can happen with a manual transmission also I don't agree that one is safer than the other and most assuredly don't agree that driving without at least one hand on the wheel is a safe practice.
