is there a notorious "weak link" in the 4.0 v6? reason i ask is i cant seem to pin point my noise at idle, it almost sounds like a worn hydraulic timing chain tensioner( do these engines use them?) what is the suggested chain replacement mileage and whats involved? the engine doesnt seem affected at all by the noise, and it goes away past 1800 rpm. it doesnt sound like a wrist pin or bearing(i know that sound!)..its very faint but louder on warm, humid days like today. im running 5w30 oil, would a slightly heavier oil help? it doesnt knock or tap, tick at all at start up, but as soon as the engines comes to an idle i hear it. its most noticeable when the trans down shifts in to 1st when coming to a stop and then slowly accelerating. i know an engine with 130 k is going to make some valve train noise. are the lifters and cam followers known to go bad on these engines?

    taco tick..

you can minimize it by isolating the evap valve on the side of the intake plenum.

My wifes '05 Fourunner with 130,000 miles has had a ticking noise ( sounds like valve train or tappet noise) for some time. Seems to be coming from the left side, but having a tough time isolating it. Any help?

Live with it they do not have zero clearance hydraulic tappets it is a normal for all engines that have adjustable tappets.
