OK, the 3.5 should be a good engine

Why hate?, because I would have loved to get 3gen truck, unfortunately since Toyota decided to go minivan way I have to now look for something else. Since I invested in a lot of tools for Toyota trucks in my home garage (3 Toyota's there are few SST tools for them) I am upset that was a waste.
Kinda dissapointed in a big way.
EDIT: Now I understand my ideal not gonna happen from factory

2Gen body with
5.7V8 + 6speed auto + AWD Torsen Transfer case + Truetrac on the front and rear + 3.33 gears

But at least I would like to be close to it.

 

Let's take'r easy, folks. Even if torque does not go up, we still know that we are getting a more efficient truck, more horsepower AND more towing capacity. Toyota is making these changes to largely comply with CAFE regs. They probably would love nothing more than to offer a Diesel or small V8 that offered gobs of power but mediocre fuel economy.
Even if the engine revs a bit more, the 2016's performance will be superior to that of the 4.0.

 

Well those are great excuses but if Toyota really is being held only by CAFE why they went with plastic cages in Wheel bearings containing little to no grease and made sure design is non serviceable. Why make frame from million puzzles that can not be painted correctly with powder process. Why all the other cheap crap.
Lets face it. They are getting cheap and mediocre and want to stick to the consumers. Pretending Toyota is the same company which produced 1gen is just plain stupid. They are not the same company and they count on peoples low knowledge to continue charging premium for their vehicles.

 

Yet still Toyota/Lexus/Scion still dominate QDR surveys...
I don't get the "Get off my lawn!" mentality. The Gen 2 Tacoma was every bit as reliable as the Gen 1.

All your bitter and disappointed feelings towards Toyota (brand, products, or otherwise) are none of my concern. This thread is about the next engine in the 3rd gen Tacoma. This thread is NOT for bitching about how shiny of a turd this new gen truck might be.

 

It should outperform even the dual VVT-i 1GR. Just having the opportunity to experience an IS350 with its 2GR-FSE, the power it delivers is insane. I think this 7GR is tuned for slightly less peak horsepower in return for slightly more and broader torque curve. It's really all about the tuning at this point, since the engine capacity is more or less the same, but they can play quite a bit with the D-4S and VVT-iW parameters to seek out more torque or economy. The modified Atkinson-cycle is an added function that will have its use during light load and throttle situations.

 

I am still hoping for a small increase in torque.

Same, but the increase most likely would be at a small increase in rpm compared to the 1GR. Not a big deal in my opinion.

 

I am looking forward to the 3rd generation minivan tacoma. I know its not good enough for BlueT. Hopefully he buys something else and has to buy SST tools for that vehicle too.

I have missed a lot, but this comaring ecoboost to N/A v8s isn't fair... put a turbo on the iforce, and I bet you it pulls the same if not better.

With the mileage tanking even worse. It's fair when your comparing output and fuel economy all on the same size of vehicle. Apples to apples.

Now I really want to see the numbers on this 7GR.

Gas prices disagree. It's fair to compare the same engine, doing the same job, only better in every definition of the term. Just because Toyota isn't winning doesn't mean we should fanboy up a 10 year old powerplant that's been blown past by everybody else.

I was really worried that Toyota was just going to put a 2GR into the Tacoma and call it a day. the 7GR gives me hope that Toyota is interested in advancing their truck line. Hopefully they will update the Tundy guts at some point soon.

 

omg fuel economy in big ass trucks.... they make prius' for a reason... and chevy has the spark... Ill take a bulletproof 5.7 over an ecoboost anyday... do you really think a small engine boosted in a big truck isn't overstressed... id rather pay for gas than a new engine...

 

BTW I know you're trolling, but I enjoy these conversations.

I help run a fleet at work. We have had one Ecoboost fail out of 14 trucks and several million km's. The engine that failed was promptly replaced by Ford on warranty, even though it was over mileaged.

I'd be happy if Toyota would even update the iForce to get mileage like the 5.7 Hemi, 5.3 Vortec, or 5.0 Coyote. All of those engines get similar power with better mpg IRL. Between the very high 4.1 rear differential and the very old design of the iForce the Tundra is really hurting.

Hey, I agree, it takes gas to make power. I don't want a prius. I don't want to waste gas though just for the sake of wasting gas.

I'm also not here to knock anyone who owns a Tundra. It's a nice looking truck and people can drive whatever they want. I prefer the new 2015 F150 in my driveway though, and it out tows and mpg's the Tundra big time even though both were just redesigned...

 

family has owned Toyotas since the 70s off and on, and ZERO failures.... owned one ford, and it was enough to never buy another one. Toyota is smart enough to cater to the people who want their truck for 400,000+ miles.... not gas mileage, not towing. Reliability. and im not trolling... you keep your stock F/I and have fun... just don't pull next to an F/I tundra and expect to win....
