You tied the two together to try and make a statement of fact sound incorrect, when really you don't understand oil sands extraction enough to comment.

Right now the biggest issue with the oil sands is the tailings ponds from conventional mining, much in the same way as with any other mining. The water and energy demands are not major issues any more. There's even rumors of a new Candu reactor near Fort Mac in the future to reduce GHG impact.

 

That's a weak argument , I use a vehicle that is appropriate for my end use which is carpentry , I don't think hauling my tools and materials in a Prius would work . If Toyota offered a hybrid Tacoma I would get it . GHG emmissions is a nationwide issue that our current federal government seems unwilling to engage in reducing as it would impact it's oilsands voter base . Luckily the Provinces seem to be taking the initiative to attempt to monitor and address the issue .

It would be nice to actually participate with a real contribution in Paris this year

 

You're right , I did encompass both when I didn't comment on them seperately

and you're right , tailings ponds that are full of formerly fresh water forever contamintated with toxins is a big water consumption issue

I was generalizing. I get tired of hearing about reducing GHG emissions from people who choose to drive to work everyday. You could easily use a full sized van with a diesel engine that gives off less CO2, but I concede my point was more in frustration than against your choice in vehicle.

Until there is a system in place the US agrees with that actually limits China's GHG emissions going forward there will be no progress in Paris.

Canada's vast east to west distance makes reducing our carbon footprint a real headache. Lots of farms here are trying biogas plants and exhaust recycling but the costs are high and the returns minimal. Still have to give credit to the farms for leading rather than following.

That was my original point. Agriculture cares about our part in the environment, and individuals are putting there money where there mouth is unlike most industries.

Interesting. Well it sounds like it's time to build a CANDU complex near Fort Mac to supply steam and power. That would cut out a lot of GHGs. Maybe give us a shot at meeting the US targets.

Speaking of AECL, little disappointed in the direction Chalk River is headed, but I think it's to late to stop that death.
IMO Nuclear is the most stable of existing clean energy technologies, though there seems to be some great strides in offshore tidal generation.

^ True. Sad to see that the process was known to be possibly illegal and yet they plowed ahead anyways.

On a side note I wonder how many millions/billions it'll take for the reserves to give in. It'll all get embezzled anyways, just like the money Calgary is throwing at the ring road through Tsuu T'ina First Nation 145. Adds a whole new definition to dirty money when it concerns oil I guess.
