So that's the term for it? I was pulled over on my motorcycle after midnight. A rookie ride-along was given the "pre textual" instruction with me...
The cop explained that the reason he pulled me over was that he had inverted the numbers when he ran my plates. WTF?

Haha that's a great story! Reminds me a little of the scene in "Gone in Sixty Seconds" where Nicholas Cage hooks up the tow truck's chain to the rear axle of the thug's car...

My truck has the towing package installed. I don't have a hitch in at all times but I had someone rear end me in a Scion TC. The towing package receiver really saved my ass....literally.

The Tacoma didn't take ANY damage except for the tailgate. I had just done a ton of woodwork and was driving with the tailgate down for the very first time so the sawdust would blow out. Then this dick hits me. So aside from the scuff in the tailgate that buffed out nothing happened to the truck. The Scion, pictured below....wasn't so lucky :(

Your tailgate was down but was only scuffed? Tailgates are made out of cardboard, what saved it?

Yeah I'm surprised the tailgate didn't even dent.

I think it was too high and just flipped up. I think his car basically went under the receiver and the hood crumpled UP and barely touched the tailgate. Needless to say, after the cop saw what happened I was good to go and drove home. The TC....not so much.

Uhm, without being there when the conversation took place, I can't comment on what he was talking about.

We all make mistakes. I have pulled over a car/bike and accidentally ran it as "123" instead of "132". I simply explained to the person my mistake and wished him a good day.

This is turning into a thread jack though. If you have specific questions, bring them over to the LEO thread and I would be happy to answer them!

I have a shackle receiver in my hitch. And it protrudes about 2" from the bumper. It should do the trick in the event I am rear ended by some asshole.

Accidents happen and I wish no ill will on the less skilled drivers that just fuck up BUT, I wish bad things to happen to those that text while driving. Fucking dangerous.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
I've been hit dozens of times in multiple cars and trucks, once it pushed the trailer hitch up through the floor in a Jeep Cherokee, once I punched a perfectly square hole in a woman's bumper, once some moron hit my hitch and continued to put pressure on my car forcing it forward so hard that I couldn't get it out of PARK... I hope he enjoyed the knee that I put in his drivers door.

It is illegal in PA to leave your hitch in the receiver, but I've never seen it enforced. Personally I'd like to be the inventor of a hitch spike... I nice long pointy steel rod that can pierce a bumper or radiator...LOL

I think the biggest problem with doing this in a state where it's technically illegal, even if it's never enforced, is that after someone hits you; Their insurance company can try to claim damage from your illegal hitch and probably ultimately make you pay for something that was their drivers fault if they challenge. Or at the very least get a neutral ruling so that no one is at fault.

Couldnt have said it better. Funny how many pokes here never think about any of the consequences, then cry later when their truck isn't covered by the damage...

    Just a few LEDs...
There are those that argue that leaving the hitch in the receiver could amplify the damage incurred in a rear end collision, but I recently saw a thread on here where the OP got rear ended and the car still hit the receiver and caused damage similar to what I have seen when people left the hitch in.

The way I look at it if I leave the hitch in the receiver is this:

If a car rear ends my truck at low speed like the one that hit me did, his car is the only one that gets damaged. I get to smile----> :D

If a car rear ends my truck at a higher speed, the car may hit the hitch and receiver hard enough to bend the frame but the same would most likely happen even without the hitch in. In the end, both vehicles will be damaged but at least I will have the satisfaction of having my hitch punch a big ass hole in the front of the car that hits me. Yes I lose but I still get to smile----> :D

I leave my hitch in all the time as well. Saved me from a rear end once so far
