OK, the 3.5 should be a good engine

Since we're discussing engines, has anyone considered the SC400 from the lexus? It's a 4.0 V8 with VVT-i and numbers similar to the 1GR-FE supercharged. It's made of aluminum and if I read correctly, lighter than the 1GR-FE. Thoughts? I found it when looking at alternatives to a $5,000 supercharger.

This is true. I do like the modern V8 and modern competitor talk though. I mean, those are the trucks Toyota is positioned against and the engines that should share similar technologies.

You are talking about the UZ series of motors. Yes, lots of talk in this thread about them. The V8 that was in the 4Runner was a UZ.

It's an old design and would of required more serious work to update again. I won't get into details about how old that design actually is. Plus with CAFE requirements Toyota wouldn't stick a V8 in the Tacoma.

The S/C is a CAFE beating option, since it's technically an aftermarket part. I could see a S/C coming out for the 3.5 L. Maybe.

Yes, that was the one thing I didn't like, that it was older. If I were to swap my trucks engine (highly unlikely) I would want the engine to be modern. I don't think the Tacoma should come with a V8, that's what superchargers and full sizes are for.

If this 3.5L is rumored to approach the 300HP mark, I can only imagine a supercharged one.

Question, if this new engine does make it close to 300HP, will the axles need to be beefed up? Sure, our supercharged 1GR-FEs are just fine but what if you supercharged the 7GR, do we know our axles can handle that? We don't know they're the same but there was talk about them looking similar during the nitpick shit fit after Januray 12th.

At the Detroit auto show toyota mentioned that they redesigned the entire power train, and specifically mentioned the differentials. So I'm guessing they've, at the very least, been realloyed for greater strength.

I think a S/C 7 GR will get about 350 HP and 345 lbs of torque. Toyota builds the S/C to bump up torque, the HP gain won't be all that epic I don't think. If they even make a S/C.

Thanks. I wish there was some more to talk about the 3.5, sterdog. There just isn't anything. It's gonna be a good lowend torque motor that revs to 6200 rpm. Towing at 4000 lbs on 6% slopes it will be screaming at max rpm's to hold 60mph, same as it was with the 4.0.

Same as the new Colorado/Canyon, also screaming to hold 60 mph on 6% slopes. Tundra 4.7L doesn't scream, sounds nice, nice roar.

A modern boosted version of a new motor type is much more likely than your old Tundras motor. Let's try talking about this decade and this decades design considerations, mmkay.

PS, you should hear my boosted TRD S/C Tacoma exhaust. My neighbour had a Tundra. He's jelly. Told me right to my face. He just traded off to a new GM truck because the old Tundra couldn't tow his bumper hitch worth a shit in the Rockies.

Let's get back to the thread now.

The current blower claims gains of 68 HP and 68 TQ. I am sure someone would make a blower for it, I certainly hope so. I did not know they mentioned the differentials. Since when does the engine have more HP than TQ though, with or without the S/C?

Do you have videos of your truck? Sounds nice.

Since you bring it up, I was looking at the SC for the 4.0. I figured it wasn't worth the $5000, less mpg and has to run on 91 octane premium all the time. 4.7L on 87 is fine with me. Just too much $$$$ for the SC..

Have you found a job, Oz? Don't worry about what I do, you need to concern yourself with finding a job so you can move out of your parent's basement.

Think I'd rather spend $5k on a SC for a newer truck than spend that or more to downgrade to an older truck with less power. 305hp/334lbs > 271hp/313lbs.

A 1st gen double cab is much cheaper than a comparable Tacoma. Much cheaper. Just a far less desirable truck, at least in my area. Can't beat the value of a 1st gen Tundra DC. I would like to see how a "more powerful" SC'd Tacoma handles towing 10k. My weak 05 DC Tundra which was all stock handled it quite well.

So what are you guys doing that needs all this power?
Last I monitored it, I was only using 35HP, fully loaded, on a horizontal section of the PA turnpike, at 65 mph. I think the highest value I saw that day was 150HP, accelerating (to pass) while climbing an 8% grade.

I think a smaller engine displacement that provides a similar horsepower and torque curve should provide better mpg at lower rpms, simply by flowing less volume.
