I am moving forward with buying a cap and have been doing a ton of searching and reading for every positive about on cap somebody has a negative and vise versa. I have narrowed it down to the final 3 and want to see what you all think. I have pics of 2 of them and the other I think everyone is familiar with and your basic cap.
    First is the Leer 100XR..

Next on the list is the ARE X Series, below is a pic of that cap (not my truck)
    ARE_1115746.jpg

Next is the ARE Overland (not my truck or Tacoma for that matter but similar to Magnetic Gray)

    ARE_5362769.jpg

    ARE_7791350.jpg

    ARE_8893937.jpg

The 2 ARE are about the same $, slightly more than the LEER. I'm looking at the same set-up for all 3 fold down front slider, sliders on both sides, headliner, Roof rails for future rack and interior lighting.

My truck is a 2012 DCSB in Magnetic Gray, Lets get some input.

I can only give input on Leer. I've had a 100xL and the 100xr. I love the xr. Had a roof rack, sliding windows, carpet lined, etc. Looked really good on my truck and fit very well. As far as ARE goes, people who have them swear that they are the best thing since sliced bread, but i've never owned one so i don't know. All i know is i was happy with my Leer and will probably purchase another Leer in the future. All shells are expensive, but the ARE seem to be a little more.

Before I purchased mine I went and checked out the Leer XL and the ARE Z. I felt the ARE quality was better then the Leer. For example I do have a few paint blemishes (very minor...small paint dimples ect ect) on my ARE Z but the Leers appeared to have many more. As far as price I was able to get the Z for 1950 out the door with a free front tilt window and the Leer XL was with in a few dollars of that. The design of the Leer looks better on the Tacoma but I just liked the build better on the ARE. The ARE's are not the greatest thing since sliced bread but they are good quality and I have no regrets.

I have owned a LEER 100r and currently a 100XL, loved the both and had no issues.

LEER is typically cheaper than ARE, and I do like the looks of the ARE in spite of owning LEER. I recommend LEER and if you decide to buy, go to their website and get a compedative coupon. The coupon can save you an additional $50-$200 depending on the unit. Be sure to do this and present it to the dealer ON THE DAY OF THE ORDER or it won't be accepted. Just one more incentive to sway you towards LEER.

I wish I had spec'd a fold down front slider for mine. Trying to clean that glass is a real pain for an OCD idiot like myself. Went with win-doors for the sides and couldn't be happier.

Fold down front slider windows are great. A must if you like clear visibility. Doesn't add much to the price either. Sometimes ARE has a coupon for free upgrades.

Not sure if you've seen ProTops, or even considered them :stirthepot: They typically run cheaper, and the one I got is top quality. Would recommend 100%. Fold down slider up front, lined with carpet, sliding windows. Also, from the few that I tried on my truck, the extra tall ones may not look super sleek at first glance, but the extra space on the inside is absolutely worth it IMO. Cheers, hope you find what you want.

I had a leer on my 03 and have an are cx series on my 12. The leer had nicer features but it was a more expensive shell, the are is really good as well.

I just got an ARE. One of the main reason I chose it over the Leer is that I wanted the windoor on the drivers side. They both have a depression around the window's but the Leer's doesn't match the actual window while the ARE's do.

If I could figure out how to post a photo I'd show you what I'm talking about.

Whichever you choose, get the coupon on hteir website!

Where did you find the Z at the price, sounds like I need to shop around compared to the quote I received.

I just got the ARE MX, they had a special free rope light with prop switch. Their website shows three special deals, but doesn't specify you get choice of one option. The dealer added all three and it went through. Carpet covering, prop switch/ rope light, and $75 off. I paid extra $10 for second rope light. Options installed when you order look better than adding later. It was ok, but the rear door fitment kinda sucks. I definitely would NOT consider it the best thing since sliced bread, maybe mediocre at best.

Can't help on the Leer or ARE, but you don't have Snug Top back there....what many have said about the "extra's" is true in all tops. Seems they run monthly specials, and if you have a good dealer they will sometimes combine them (mine got the fold down front window...a must!) and the upgraded pro lock thrown in for free when I ordered mine. Lots of times they won't deal much on price (maybe the mfg has some control?), but they will throw in extras at little or no additional cost in many cases. Also, if you are buying new, check pricing via the mfgs dealer locator for your area. I drove a couple hours to pick up mine, but at a much better deal than the local company was offering.

I had a leer 100xr on my 12 Tacoma and I loved the lines and the frameless window looked beautiful. I did have some problems with the door not opening high enough, the door also didn't latch reliably, my side sliders didn't slide well, it just felt like it was built on a Friday when the guys were trying to get out of work

That being said my neighbor had a leer on his ford and it is almost perfect, none of the problems mine had

After my 12 was totaled I replaced it with a new Tacoma and got a ARE (I think cx?). I wanted the framed back window drop down front, pet screens and a rack.

Aulthough it is a very good looking cap, I don't think it's lines are as complimentary as the leer was to the Tacoma

However, it feels solid and just works really well. Holds all my crap, rack works great, and it seems like it will easily last the life of my truck

I have an ARE CX and love the thing. Happy with the purchase. I know people with Leer shells and love them as well. One feature I truly love is the side windoors. It's worth looking into. I used them many times without having to crawl into the shell to get items.

You will find people happy and pissed with any of them - you won't go wrong with any one you choose... I recently bought an ARE because they threw in carpeted liner, lights and tilting front slider. I also bought the "latest greatest" bed liner - it's some sort of plastic material that looks a lot like trunk carpet. About 1/2" thick and about as durable as can be. It added something like $400 to the order but it will be nice to have the entire bed/canopy lined and looking brand new!

Suburban Caps in Mahwah NJ and I only got it October of 2014. There was a coupon at the time to get a free flip down window. Suburban has good customer care as well they are fixing a leak I have in the front corner without issues.
