Tires-Nitrogen filed

Just purchased my first Toyota Tacoma. 2010 4x4 double cab long bed in Pyrite Mica with TRD Sport value Package. Came with 17" Nitrogen filled tires. I wanted feedback on this new process of tire. Any good or bad experiences?

 

The nitrogen helps keep moisture out. They have been using nitrogen in aircraft tires for decades.

 

nitrogen is used in aircraft tires so that they wont freeze at really high altitudes...i doubt you have to worry about that with your taco though.

 

I wouldn't give the fact that they came w/ Nitrogen a second thought, but I wouldn't spend money to re-fill them w/ nitrogen later. It's a complete waste of money.

 

Supposedly nitrogen expands and contracts less. SO the idea is that your tire pressure will remain constant. That and they won't "lose air" as quickly. The tire shop down the street from us fills them with nitrogen free of charge. They did it for my Wife's car and honestly the tires do hold their pressure a lot longer.

 

I'd do it if I could get it for free. Good job on the good deal.

 

The dealer I work at is charging $70.00 for nitrogen filled tires.
I know the Toyota dealer down the street is on the program too, but I don't know how much they charge. Considering they charge $1995.00 for pinstripes and door edge guards on Tacomas, they probably charge a fortune for nitrogen.

 

Just need to carry the equipment to purify it to 100% Nitrogen. Who needs a bed in the truck anyway?

Just another thrify selling point. Consumers are far to easy to be convinced and make them believe they're actually getting something.

I check my air pressure regularly and the fact that my truck has the TPMS to let me know when the air pressure gets too low.... Nitrogen is pointless to me.

 

Costco's tire shop uses Nitrogen. Not sure what it costs if you're a member though.

 

It's included in the mount and balance charge. I think it's $14.00 per tire.

 

Time to steal my roomate's costco card. Just ordered 33's.

 

This is true. Figured I'd shed a little light on this. My company used to manufacture nitrogen tire generators. Numerous independent studies have been done on Nitrogen vs. Basic compressed air and each conclusion was it DOES improve treadlife, gas mileage, rim integrity and even performance.

Since it doesn't contract as much and does not hold moisture, it will keep a more consistent distribution of air throughout the tire (when you turn, it will stay more balanced) and it will not erode the rims away. Thats why all NASCAR garages use them, not for leaks, but for performance.

Nitrogen is a much larger molecule, it does not leak nearly as much. In turn this keeps your tire filled longer, decreasing unequal tread wear while increasing mpg.

Now for people who are constantly changing pressure for off-roading, nitrogen wouldnt make much sense (unless you own a generator). But for the common driver, it will help.

If you don't quite trust it, take a look at a bus or a USPS truck with little green tags on their lugs. That indicates they are nitrogen filled. Many municipalities and large distribution companies have signed on to it.

 

Just to chime in I have the tires in the Tacoma and the 4Runner filled because it gets down to 10 degrees here at night and it could be 90 during the day. Every morning my TPMS light would be on but after it warmed up it would be off. After getting the tires filled that went away. Keep in mind if you do not include the spare this will not work. I would not pay anything over $20 to get them all filled though, that's what they charge around here.
