I'm using a cnc router to cut out my skid plates. With secondary software you can also create 3d cuts, not just 2d cuts. All kinds of possibilities.

Here's the pneumatic switch holder. I ended up making two of them as I made a mistake with the first model.

That is so cool! Turned out nice!
So is that made out of plastic? Or what material does the 3d printer use?

Thanks bud. I used black ABS plastic for this one. The two main plastics are PLA and ABS. PLA doesn't stand up to heat very well, so I went with the ABS.

Huh, interesting. So does it melt down little piece of plastic or is it like a plastic strand that gets fed into a tip that pushes it out.
We have 3 on campus but since I am not in the engineering department I don't get to use them or try to learn about them

There is a spool of 1.75mm abs that is fed through a heated nozzle. The nozzle goes around and builds the part layer by layer.

Any 3D model that can be saved as an .stl can be printed. Well, as long as it fits on the printer.

@SMKYTXN, hey Nathan, so this is what we've got here at school, I'm in this room this morning so I'll fire up the computer at that station and see what programs operate it. here are some pics.

That type of technology is not really my strong suit, but I'm going to give it a whirl. If there is any code or excessive math involved it may not keep my interest too long. ;):D

I can make wonderful things in the machine all the way to the left...the rest I don't know how to operate.

Like what? From the information I've gotten out of the other teacher that uses this lab, she says its still not working properly.
This is what she's made so far.

The makerbot is pretty easy, but there are a few quirks to it. If you can model items in 3D, then you can use the makerbot. The other option is to find .stl files that others have created, but that takes some of the fun out of it.

As far as the router, you'll have to see what software controls it. The majority of the cnc tools at my shop run on linux. We have software called sheetcam that you import a .dxf into to create your g-code for the router. The router software we have is called routerzilla.

See what's loaded up and let me know.
